One wonders what is stopping one of the most powerful entities in the country from teaching a lesson to those who attacked national monuments and state buildings. What happened on May 9 was no less than an attack on the country cloaked under the false pretext of fighting for democracy. Whosoever is and has been found to be involved in this attack, regardless of their status or popularity, must be exposed and taken to task. There can be no two opinions about this. As demonstrations continued, there were eruptions of violence which led to deaths and the closure of public and private universities. Two journalists reportedly were killed, and many others injured, while hundreds of people were arrested amidst the protests. Prompt, thorough, independent and impartial investigations in line with internationally recognized standards must be carried out into all human rights violations, they added. To regain public trust, the Government needs to take responsibility and ensure a credible process of investigation and accountability to hold perpetrators to account, they said.
