Shehbaz Sharif becomes prime minister of Pakistan, nation politically divided and in economic crisis
Sharif’s main role will also be to maintain ties with the military, which has directly or indirectly dominated Pakistan since independence. Pakistan continues to be enmeshed in economic crisis with inflation remaining high, hovering around 30 percent, and economic growth slowing to around 2 percent. Other big moves by Sharif will include the privatization of loss-making state-owned enterprises such as the flagship carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Although defense and key foreign policy decisions are largely influenced by the military, Sharif will have to juggle relations with the US and China, both major allies. As chief minister, the younger Sharif planned and executed a number of ambitious infrastructure mega-projects, including Pakistan’s first modern mass transport system in Lahore.

WTO’s Abu Dhabi Declaration to empower least developed nations

The UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade and MC13 Chair, Thani Al-Zeyoudi, described the declaration as a significant milestone for the UAE and global trade. “It has been a momentous week for Abu Dhabi, for the UAE, and for global trade. “With the adopted Abu Dhabi Declaration, we have demonstrated that we can deliver to ensure the global trading system remains a vital engine of growth and development for nations around the world. MC13, hosted by the UAE’s Ministry of Economy and the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, took place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center from Feb. 26 to March 2.

Rights outfits form joint action committee to fight rising exterimism
HYDERABAD - A joint meeting of various rights organisations held under the aegis of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) at local press club, formed joint action committee (JAC) against rising extremism and fundamentalism in society. HRCP’s adviser Imdad Chandio said that a strong platform was needed for protecting fundamental human rights. This was the only way to achieve basic human rights, he said. This joint action committee being formed would be made a powerful forum, he said. Women Action Forum (WAF) activist Dr Arfana Mallah said that freedom of expression and human rights had been intentionally snatched in this society.

Another Pakistan airlines cabin crew member goes missing in Canada

He was scheduled to report for the return flight PK-782 to Islamabad on Thursday, according to a PIA spokesman, Dawn reported. So far this year, three cabin crew members have gone missing after arriving in Canada, Dawn reported. Last year, at least seven PIA cabin crew members had gone missing in the country while performing flight duties. According to the national carrier’s spokesman, one of the crew members who had slipped away while on duty some years ago has now settled in Canada and “advises” other crew members mulling asylum, Dawn reported.

Religious institutes can play a pivotal role in reducing radicalism and prejudice.

Sindh govt, World Bank to invest $100m in renewables
The Sindh government is collaborating with the World Bank to set up renewable energy projects in solar and wind equipment, aiming to protect the environment from greenhouse gases and Pakistan from recurrent natural disasters. The government of Sindh is working to set up 500 MW solar power projects, 400 MW hydrogen power projects, and waste-to-energy projects, Qazi said. Qazi said the Sindh government has developed a policy of providing affordable land for alternative energy projects. He also mentioned that the Sindh government and K-Electric are collaborating on several alternative energy projects. The Karachi-based private energy firm is harnessing wind energy from the wind corridor located in Gharo in the province.
