South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says It was our place to get involved and that the ICJ’s ruling must be respected by all who recognise the court, including Israel. Speaking after the court’s ruling on the application brought by his country, Ramaphosa says South Africa expects Israel, “as a self-proclaimed democracy, and as a state that respects the rule of law,” to abide by the ruling. “Some have told us we should mind our own business and not get involved in the affairs of other countries and yet it is very much our place as the people who know too well the pain of dispossession, discrimination, state-sponsored violence,” he said. He said following the ruling, there should be more effort towards a ceasefire, and an end to the conflict through a two-state solution that would grant Palestinians self-determination. https://tribuneonlineng.com/icj-orders-israel-to-halt-killings-in-gaza-but-no-cease-fire/YOU SHOULD NOT MISS THESE HEADLINES FROM NIGERIAN TRIBUNEI receive threats over comment on powerful Nigerians behind banditry, illegal mining — AlakeMinister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, has confirmed that following his comment on how powerful Nigerians are funding banditry associated with…Why Abba Kyari fought me till death — Femi AdesinaFormer presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, has revealed the behind the scene intrigues that set him up against…OFFCUT: Remove subsidy, give us prepaid meters, Nigerians react to 700bn electricity subsidyNigerians have reacted to the huge amount of money used by the Federal Government to…I was doing poorly in class until…— Afe BabalolaThe founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), stated that he was doing poorly in class until…

The Supreme Court has upheld the five years sentence handed to former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, by the Court of Appeal for bribery. In 2021, Lawan was convicted and sentenced to prison for accepting $500,000 bribe from Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, Femi Otedola. Lawan’s appeal requested to set aside the February 24, 2022 judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja. The court sentenced him to five years and discharged him on two out of the three counts on the corruption charge brought against him by the Federal Government. In the lead judgment read by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the Supreme Court held that Lawan’s appeal was without merit and went on to dismiss it.

The UK has halted trade talks with Canada, with discussions breaking down after a disagreement over beef and cheese. A UK government spokesperson said: “We have always said we will only negotiate trade deals that deliver for the British people. The UK had been trading with Canada on terms that largely replicated the arrangements in place from the UK’s time in the EU. Before Britain left the EU at the end of 2020, Canada rolled over existing trade arrangements to ensure free trade could continue. Minette Batters, the president of the National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales, said the stopping of the trade talks was “a relief for farmers”.

Few days after the commencement of the sale of forms for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), prospective applicants have expressed frustration over their inability to link their telephone lines with their National Identification Number (NIN) or ‘incorrect’ information contained in their NIN details. The local government area for her state of origin provided during her NIN registration is quite different from what we found at the point of registration. “These children shouldn’t be made to face this kind of crisis because they are seeking admission into tertiary institutions. JAMB’s head of public affairs, Fabian Benjamin, said the body is surprised by the volume of complaints from applicants and parents. He, however, advised applicants who observe incorrect details in their NIN records to halt their UTME registration until the information is updated and corrected by NIMC.

COP28’s outcomes reflect the good, the bad, and the ugly of the COP process in particular, and multilateralism more broadly. The commitment to triple renewable energy capacity globally and doubling energy efficiency by 2030 presents “a good” outcome and indeed one of the biggest wins from Dubai. Last year, the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Net Zero Roadmap released a report showing scaling up renewable energy as an important way to attain global climate goals. In addition, 123 countries signed the Global Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Pledge at COP28 to triple global renewable capacity and double global energy efficiency improvements by 2030, and expand financial support for scaling renewable energy and eficiency programmes in emerging markets and developing economies. It is equally distressing that climate finance, especially for adaptation, has been decreasing instead of growing at a time of worsening climate crisis.
