The Supreme Court has affirmed the de-registration of Hope Democratic Party (HDP) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to meet some provisions of the 1999 Constitution in the results of previous elections. The Apex Court dismissed the suit brought before it by the party, its founder and presidential candidate, Ambrose Owuru challenging the legality of INEC’s action. Delivering judgment in INEC’s appeal marked SC/485/2020, the apex court, in its lead judgment read by Justice Ejembi Eko, reinstated the judgment of the Federal High Court. The affected parties are the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), All Blending Party (ABP), All Grand Alliance Party (AGAP), Alliance of Social Democrats (ASD), Change Advocacy Party (CAP), Democratic People’s Congress (DPC), Green Party of Nigeria (GPN), Masses Movement of Nigeria (MMN) and Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN). Three persons reportedly died while others sustained various degrees of injuries in a road accident involving a bus belonging to an Anglican Church in Ise Ekiti along Ise-Ikere Road. Sources said the occupants of the vehicle who were mostly women were on their way from Ise Ekiti to Ado Ekiti to participate in an annual enrolment service. The FRSC Sector Commander in Ekiti State, Olusola Joseph, who confirmed the accident, said two persons died instantly, while 10 occupants were injured. On the cause of the accident, the sector commander said, “It was tyre burst that was responsible for the accident involving the 18-seater bus. “At the same time, they (motorists) should keep to traffic rules and regulations,” the sector commander said.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Mr Ekperikpe Ekpo, has assured of uninterrupted supply to the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project. The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline was proposed in December 2016 in an agreement between the NNPCL and the Moroccan Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines. Ekpo was quoted as reassuring his host of President Bola Tinubu commitment to the success of the project. On her part, the Moroccan Energy Minister said that the pipeline project would serve as a catalyst for regional and continental development. The PUNCH reports that the Federal Government has intensified discussions with Morocco in a bid to fast-track the process of achieving the final investment decision on the $30bn Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline.

A 24-year-old student of Mass Communication at Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State, Jemima Shetima-Balami, has allegedly committed suicide after her boyfriend ended their relationship. She was said to be a second-year National Diploma student in industrial attachment with Adamawa State Television, Yola. She disclosed that Jemima’s father had reported a case of suicide while another person, Jemima’s crummy relationship with the lecturer. He said, “The father of Jamima reported that she committed suicide by taking a deadly substance. Jigawa State Government has concluded arrangements to transfer no fewer than 194 medical students who returned from Sudan following the eruption of a Civil War in the country, to Cyprus and India to continue their studies. Bidding the students farewell at government house, Governor Malam Umar Namadi said, when civil war broke out in Sudan the state government was devastated and confused until the return of the students back home safely. Governor Malam Umar Namadi the state and federal governments collaborated and worked tirelessly for the safe evacuation of the students where all of them were successfully brought back to Nigeria safely and in good condition. “Today the state ministry of Higher Education has successfully secured admission for 184 students in Cyprus University and 10 at Indian University, and all necessary arrangements has been completed for their flight to those country on 5th February”. In his part, the state commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Isa Yusuf Chamo, said, “The state government has spent ₦2.6 billion for admission, transport, registration, and other required logistics for the 194 students”.
