Singapore is set to hang a man, Tangaraju Suppiah, for trafficking cannabis, in the city-state’s latest controversial execution, the BBC reports. Tangaraju, 46, was convicted of “abetting by engaging in a conspiracy to traffic” over a delivery of 1kg (35oz) of cannabis from Malaysia to Singapore in 2013. Singapore law mandates the death penalty for drug trafficking and has lesser penalties for couriers. It follows a high-profile execution last year of an intellectually impaired man over a drugs charge. Singapore has some of the world’s toughest anti-drug laws, which it says are necessary to protect society.

I’m no scientist. In fact, I’m a journalist and writer. It’s the reasoning to survive which would seem to have eluded us as a country, as a people, as black people. It’s why Nigeria has languished at the bottom of the innovative ladder that others have climbed to attain higher goals for their citizens. I do not know how that concept died or became obsolete in the consciousness of universities and why that essential nexus between Town and Gown faded into oblivion.

Indeed, despite a great many development organisations focusing on achieving better land tenure, progress has been negligible, with zero countries reporting any progress at all. Nonetheless, achieving greater rural land security in Africa will take enormous effort, because 86 per cent of all the continent’s rural land plots are still unregistered. The case for increasing land tenure security is even stronger for the almost half a billion people living in Sub-Saharan Africa’s urban areas. More than a third of all urban land parcels are unregistered, and it would cost a much smaller $5.2bn to survey and register this land, including the land in slums, along with setting up dispute resolution and running the system. Improving urban tenure security, which at low costs would make hundreds of millions of people better off, is one such investment.

Unsurprisingly, the DRC is in the regional organisations of every region of Africa except those of North and of West Africa. With a current landmass of 1,886,068 km2 Sudan is nearly double the size of Nigeria and the third largest country in Africa behind only Algeria and the DRC. Its neighbours include Chad, Central African Republic, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Libya, and South Sudan; and its regional reach extends to the Middle East and North Africa, Central Africa, Eastern Africa, and West Africa. But Sudan has known little peace since its independence in 1956 as a Condominium of Egypt and the United Kingdom. His surviving son, Mohammed Bello, led the remainder of Attahiru’s survivors into exile in Sudan where their descendants have lived since then.
