May 29: Security agents can't stop protest, says activist
A socio-political activist, Obiora Omeje, has advised security agencies to allow citizens to express their feelings ahead of the swearing-in of Enugu State Governor-Elect, Peter Mbah. Omeje, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, saying, however, that Mbah’s swearing-in cannot be truncated by anyone. The socio-political activist further remarked that, whereas protest was a constitutional right of the citizens, it had no connection with the inauguration of the governor-elect. He said, “Protest is the fundamental right of Ndi Enugu; the right to protest is provided in the law; the people should be allowed to express themselves. “However, such protest should not truncate the process; the courts are there for aggrieved politicians to vent their anger.

The Ondo rapes and killings
It is within this context that the burgeoning descent into lawlessness in the country deserves to be thoroughly interrogated. For instance, how does anyone explain the recent reports of the apprehension of two middle-aged men by the Ondo State Police Command for raping and killing two elderly women in Ondo State? Farm hands who evidently have enough economic and financial issues to contend with committing rape and murder? The society and government have the responsibility of offering proper security and safe environment for girls and women to live a worthy life. We urge the government to live up to this crucial social obligation by ensuring strict enforcement of rules and regulations on rape and other forms of sexual violence.

Rule of law, human rights must be respected in African region – Ambassador Ma’aji
The Ambassador At Large, African Region of International Human Rights Commission, Dr. Malami Ma’aji says the commission will continue to provide legal and moral support to the victims of human rights violations in Africa and the world in general. Pantami inaugurates 4,366 projects
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami, commissioned 4,366 projects, programmes and initiatives implemented under his supervision as minister. In a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant/Spokesperson to the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Uwa Suleiman, on Friday, the event took place in Abuja, and also virtually at the remote locations of the commissioned projects. The dignitaries lauded Pantami and congratulated him for how he had shown that the Nigerian youth could excel at the top levels of leadership in the country. The commissioned projects were spread across all the states of the federation and were executed by the ministry and all the parastatals under the ministry. Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) and CNL Joint Venture, has decried the circulation of false recruitment information in various media channels. “We’re aware of the circulation of false recruitment information in several media and online channels in the name of CNL and Chevron Corporation, purportedly advertising job positions in CNL. “CNL hereby dissociates itself from all false job adverts and offers published in any newspaper, website, email, poster, handbill or any other medium. “Job offers requesting candidates to pay money, at any point during the recruitment process, are not from CNL. “CNL will not respond to enquiries about fraudulent advertisements and job offers,” the oil and gas giant warned.

A man who opened an emergency exit on an Asiana Airlines flight in mid-air felt “suffocated” and wanted to get off quickly, South Korean police said on Saturday.
