Son of Israeli war cabinet minister killed in Gaza — IDF
The son of Israel’s former army chief Gadi Eisenkot, who is currently a minister in the country’s war cabinet, has been killed in Gaza, the military says. It says 25-year-old Major Gal Eisenkot died in northern Gaza on Thursday. PM Benjamin Netanyahu said he and his wife were “broken-hearted”, and that Gal Eisenkot was a “true hero”. Hamas officials in Gaza say it has killed more than 17,000 people, mainly civilians, with thousands more missing under rubble. The fate of an entire nation in one hug.”The IDF also said that another soldier – named as Sgt Maj Jonathan David Deitch, 34 – was killed in southern Gaza on Thursday.

Russian teenage girl kills classmate, commits suicide
A teenage girl has shot and killed a fellow pupil in a school in western Russia before shooting herself, BBC reports. Five people were injured in the shooting, one of them seriously, Russian authorities said. Police were called to Gymnasium No 5 in Bryansk at about 09:15 local time (06:15 GMT) on Thursday. Russian news agency RIA said students barricaded themselves in the classroom when they heard shots being fired. “The boys barricaded the door with the desks, one girl called the police, the teacher was calling everyone else,” RIA quoted one of the school girls.

Seychelles declares state of emergency after explosion, floods
A state of emergency has been declared in Seychelles, after a massive explosion at an industrial zone on the main island, Mahé, as well as flooding. The blast ripped through the area, flattening commercial buildings and wrecking nearby housing, leaving a trail of devastation along Mahé island’s east coast. Seychelles’ President Wavel Ramkalawan has ordered everyone except essential workers to stay at home. “The Seychelles International Airport is still operational and ferry services between islands are operating for visitors,” the country’s official account said on X. President Ramkalawan called the twin disasters a “calamity” for the country and appealed for people to show solidarity with those affected.

NCS hands over donkey skins, Indian hemp to quarantine services, NDLEA
The Nigeria Customs Service, Kano Area Command, on Thursday, handed over 665 pieces of donkey skins to the North-West Coordinator of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Services, Dr. Adamu Gano. The NCS also handed over 450 blocks of compressed Indian hemp to the Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and 1,290 cartons of unregistered pharmaceutical products to the State Coordinator of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. Speaking at the occasion, the Comptroller of Customs, Kano State Command, Mr. Dauda Chana, said that the collaborative efforts have continued to be fruitful. “We remain resolute in our commitment to eradicating illegal activities that pose a threat to our society,” Chana said. Representatives of various organisations who spoke lauded the support from the NCS and sought sustained inter-agency cooperation in addressing the prevailing complex challenges.

The upcoming Tata Punch EV has been spotted testing on several occasions and a new set of spy shots further reveals more details on the much-awaited offering. While the test mule was heavily camouflaged Tata Punch EV, new LED DRLs were visible on the car's fascia which looked similar in appearance to the Tata Nexon EV facelift. The Tata Punch EV will arrive sometime next year as a direct rival to the Citroen e-C3 in the segment. IPPIS: FG begins payment of civil servants' withheld salaries
Several senior civil servants confirmed the development to our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday. The PUNCH had exclusively reported that thousands of civil servants had their November 2023 salaries withheld by the government owing to irregularities on the IPPIS. A senior civil servant who confirmed receipt of her salary on Wednesday said, “The alert dropped a few minutes ago. I am happy to inform you that my November 2023 salary has now been paid. Same thing with others in my office.”Another civil servant who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “It is true, we have now been paid.”The National President, Association of Senior Civil Servants, Tommy Etim, had earlier warned that about 5,000 civil servants risked forfeiture of their November 2023 and December 2023 salaries over IPPIS verification and other discrepancies.

Otti’s wife, NGSF call for SGBV
The wife of the governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has said she is now better informed and equipped on positive ways of eradicating sexual and gender-based violence, SGBV, in the society. Otti stated this at the on-going 4th Annual Conference of the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum, NGSF, holding at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, to mark the 16 days of activism on sexual and gender-based violence. In her address, the chairperson of the forum, and wife of the governor of Kwara State, Professor Olufolake Abdulrazak, said that it is time to engage youth allies in building generations to end gender-based violence. This compact, she explained, “outlines priority actions to enhance birth registration, enforcing legal frameworks, and improving access to quality health services. It is also a commitment to collaborate for change led by the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum, government agencies, civil society organizations, and communities to combat violence.”

COP28: NDDC to develop new green skills for jobs creation
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), says it is leveraging on the key sectors of the energy transition plan to develop new green skills and create new jobs. UK pledges £100m for vulnerable countries tackling climate change
The UK Government has made commitments to help vulnerable countries strengthen their resilience to the increasingly frequent and severe effects of climate change at the COP28 Summit. International Development and Africa Minister Andrew Mitchell announced £100 million to support some of the most climate-vulnerable countries tackle climate change. Mitchell, said: “The devastating effects of climate change hit the most vulnerable the hardest. They will help roll out measures such as early warning systems, and open up access to climate finance to build resilient health services. The Climate Resilient Education Systems Trial will build an evidence base of effective approaches to combatting climate change in and through education.
