The kids had got fishing rods from their grandparents for Christmas and decided to give them a go. Although Murphy's children had freshwater fishing licenses from Fish and Game, she didn't, and so the ranger served her with an infringement notice. The Murphy family were shocked to hear that parents can't help kids fish if they don't have licenses themselves. "I've never stolen, I've never done anything remotely illegal, now I have a diversion for casting a fishing line," Murphy said. We encourage the family to attend Fish and Game's children's instructional fishing event in the area in December."

“How many of you are even from the West Coast?” A rheumy-eyed old-timer who appeared to have seen too many West Coast winters, demanded of the protesters. That so many of the protesters were residents of the West Coast indicated how dramatically attitudes have changed in 30 years. It may be confidently predicted that the Resources Minister, and a great many other people, will be watching extremely closely to see how many people follow them. If similar environmental protests (against genetic engineering, against West Coast coal-mining) offer any guide, then well in excess of 30,000 marchers may be expected. Nor should it be forgotten that the coking-coal from New Zealand’s West Coast is highly prized by steel-makers around the world.

"Stuff isn't just reproducing what we've always had," said WBD Vice President, Head of Networks ANZ, Juliet Peterson. On April 15, it was confirmed WBD had filed a trademark claim for the names "Three News" and "ThreeNews" in the wake Newshub's closure. Stuff had lodged the trademark with the New Zealand Intellectual Properties Office on Monday, April 15, just one day before it was revealed the company would take over production of the bulletin. In May, Stuff announced it had hired current Newshub Live at 6pm presenter Samantha Hayes to be the main presenter for its new bulletin. The new 6pm bulletin will be broadcast seven days a week, starting on July 6.

Photo: StuffPolice are returning to crime-fighting ways of old in their fight against gangs, as technology becomes harder to hack, experts in New Zealand's criminal underworld say. In light of the recent police announcement on national and local gang units, today's episode of The Detail looks at how police and governments have fought back against gangs over the decades. Photo: suppliedHe says the introduction of methamphetamine in the late 1990s and early 2000s "supercharged the criminal underworld in which gangs belonged to". Former senior cop Lance Burdett, now a trainer in crisis intervention and personal stress, spent much of his policing career dealing with gangs. He tells The Detail the new gang unit is really just "policing in general" with a "different name".

Supply and demand in the New Zealand economy are back in balance and prices are behaving more normally, despite slow progress in domestic services inflation. Our output gap is pretty much zero and we're pretty much around what we used to call maximum sustainable employment in the labour market,” he said on Friday. However, core inflation in the United Kingdom remains uncomfortably high at 4%, while its services inflation was just under 6%. Statistics NZ’s measure of core inflation shows an annual rate of about 4.5% in the most recent release and RBNZ’s flagship core measure puts it at 4.3%. RBNZ Governor Adrian Orr said the inflation pressures were concentrated in the short-term and sectors less affected by interest rates.

Photo: ODTHigh schools are witnessing pupils fighting with a type of violence that lasts longer and is more aggressive, the head of a group representing principals says. Fights were often among groups and they were "not stopping when the person goes down", he said. Anecdotally, those engaging in fights were "harder to bring back from the edge - it's harder to de-escalate". Historically, teenagers had fought with their fists and while this was not to be condoned, the use of a weapon was "really, really troubling", he said. Overall, offending by adolescents had decreased in the past decade - but a certain group of teenagers were offending more, Dr Sutherland said.
