Wellington: In a severe case of medical negligence, a New Zealand woman found a surgical tool, the size of a dinner plate, in her abdomen 18 months after her C-section delivery, the media reported. New Zealand’s Health and Disability Commissioner, Morag McDowell, found Te Whatu Ora Auckland — the Auckland District Health Board — in breach of the code of patient rights, in a report released on Monday. “Te Whatu Ora pointed to a lack of expert evidence to support the conclusion that [the code] had been breached and referenced known error rates,” McDowell wrote. In a statement, Te Whatu Ora Group director of operations for Auckland Mike Shepard apologised to the woman. For ethical and privacy reasons we can’t comment on the details of individual patient care.

An empty house tax targets home owners who let a property sit empty for a certain length of time. New Zealand would not be breaking new ground with an empty house tax. What’s more, New Zealand has the infrastructural prerequisites needed to implement an empty house tax. In Ireland, the empty house tax is three times the property’s existing base local property tax. To ensure the success of the empty house tax, we need to include credible measures to monitor compliance.

Grass-roots group Save Waipara Valley (SWV) have identified disturbing signs of ‘greenwashing’ in one developer’s approach to industrial-scale solar generation. Far North Solar Farm Ltd (FNSF) are currently considering the development of 11 large-scale solar plants around New Zealand, including a 200-hectare plant in the Waipara Valley. "Of course renewable energy has huge promise," says Kelsey, "but just because a company generates renewable electricity doesn’t mean that overall it is sustainable and environmentally-friendly." Meeting renewable energy targets must not come at the expense of New Zealand’s environment and food production capacity. Public agencies in New Zealand have continued to secure large IT contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars, even as the government promises to reduce spending on contractors. The Labour Party’s recent commitment to cut contractor and consultant spending by $165 million next year has raised questions about the tension between their pledge and the awarded contracts. These contracts align with the government’s push for agencies to utilize private off-site cloud services instead of managing their own information. While the government has faced criticism from the National Party regarding contractor spending, the specific targets for the proposed $165 million cuts have yet to be determined. However, there are concerns that agencies may rush to secure big IT contracts to meet these targets, potentially impacting domestic contracts.

PHOTO: NZ HERALDLabour's vote has collapsed to fresh lows according to a new poll, which shows National and Act on track to govern after the October 14 election. The latest monthly Roy Morgan survey shows Labour has just 24 percent support, down two percent from last month. The Australian company's result is marginally out of step with Kiwi pollsters, who have both Labour and National higher - but with a similar margin - and Act polling in the low teens. The campaign proper began on the weekend with Labour and National holding their party launches in Auckland. The poll results do not capture those events, when Labour launched a new policy to make free basic dental care to under 30s.
