Suddenly, I was thrust into a situation that drained away all my opportunities like water going down a ditch. I spent the first few months drifting through online classes, not willing to accept that this would be my “new normal”. My grades had dropped drastically – the worst of all was the big fat D I got for my Add Maths. By completing two or three tasks a day, no matter how small, I felt like I had done something productive. Quizlet also gave me the option of printing my notes out, be it in a glossary or flashcard format.

I get to see my teachers and friends whom I have not met in person for a long time. I feel safe because my classmates and I follow the SOPs like how our teachers tell us to. Coming to school gives me more ‘semangat’ (motivation) to learn because my teachers are right in front of me. I feel confident coming to school now because everyone maintains a distance and always have their mask on. Our teachers are very understanding and have everything in our school under control.”SK Jalan Kuantan 2, Kuala Lumpur Year Six pupil Wan Mahfuzah Samihah Bahizal

In Malaysia, meanwhile, after a brief dip, we are seeing the numbers climb higher and higher once again. If we shut down sectors of the economy, we reduce crowds, and – as we have seen many times in Malaysia – we bring the Covid-19 numbers down. The flip side of that, meanwhile, is that the Covid-19 numbers invariably go back up. It feels like we are choosing to drink the sweet tea first, only to find ourselves thereafter drinking the bitter tea of climbing Covid-19 numbers. Who can forget Jacinda Ardern’s video of New Zealanders enjoying a barbecue because they had brought down Covid-19 numbers so low?

Tomorrow is World Press Freedom Day (WPFD). Regrettably, in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders on April 17, Malaysia slipped to 119, falling 18 spots from the previous year. In so doing, the world has regarded the action on Malaysiakini as an attack on press freedom. Having said that, press freedom is indisputably essential to democracy. Happy Press Freedom Day to journalists in Malaysia.
