Through little things – "the older one likes tomatoes now" – it really hit home that she had missed out on a lot. Even with letters, visits and phone calls, she said she still felt a "constant wrench" and had the sense "of missing everything". The concept was highlighted by sociologist Corey Keyes in his 2002 research paper, “The Mental Health Continuum: From Languishing to Flourishing in Life”. A common misconception of positive psychology is that it’s about being positive and ignoring the difficulties of life. Sunny Side Up columnist Sandy Clarke has long held an interest in emotions, mental health, mindfulness and meditation.

Recently, China released a white paper titled “Poverty Alleviation: China’s Experience and Contribution” to share its experience in poverty alleviation. This serves as reference for other developing countries to choose a suitable path of poverty alleviation. Over the years, I have seen the gradual but unmistakable shift in parents’ attitudes towards the Year Six examination. They would sign up their kids for “UPSR camps”, some of which are rah-rah sessions or money-making scams camouflaged as exam preparatory “seminars”. Isn’t it more important for children at that age to develop social skills, or heighten their sense of curiosity that adds joy to what learning is all about? Over the years I have seen how my students’ key developmental skills were impeded by the emphasis on the UPSR. But for now, abolishing the UPSR is the right move and kudos to the Education Ministry for that!
