Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has received a list of 10 Israeli hostages set to be released by Hamas today, while Israel has identified an additional 50 female Palestinian prisoners it would release as a ceasefire in Gaza stretches into a fifth day. A plane carrying Qatari diplomats landed in Israel early Tuesday afternoon local time, likely for the same reasons, the newspaper Haaretz reported. Qataris’ prime minister, Mohammed bin Abdelrahman Al-Thani rejected criticism by Israel that his country, a major funder of Hamas, was too close to the Gaza-based terror group. “We have built relations with Hamas in order to maintain peace and stability in the region,” he told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine. In recent years, we have negotiated cease-fires or similar agreements between Hamas and Israel over and over again.

Liberian Timber stakeholders under the banner “Broader Market Recognition Coalition” (MBRC) has endorsed an international instrument aimed at opening new horizons in the international market that would give them the opportunity to sell Liberia timber species to more countries other than Britain and the European Union. The document was endorsed over the weekend following a two-day brainstorming session in Monrovia by representatives from the government led by the Forestry Development Authority, private sector (logging companies) and civil society. The statement said in view of the above, Liberia’s forest stakeholders recognized that in establishing the BMRC National Committee, consideration should be given to strengthening the existing Multi-stakeholders Processes. According to the Liberian forest stakeholders, the BMRC is a new approach thus concerted efforts should be made to provide education and awareness by the BMRC National Committee of Liberia to ensure that all forest stakeholders fully embraces this global initiative to incentivize tropical sustainable forest systems. Other Liberian forest stakeholders that signed the MBRC document alongside the FDA include the Liberia Timber Association (LibTA); relevant Government Ministries and Agencies (MAC); Liberia Chainsaw and Timber Dealers Union; NGO Coalition of Liberia; the National Benefit Trust Sharing Board and the National Union of Community Forest Management Board.

Biden said the 4-year-old hostage, Abigail Edan, had witnessed her parents being killed by Hamas fighters during their Oct. 7 raid into Israel and had been held since then.

President-elect Joseph Nyuma Boakai is no stranger to the leadership tenacity of the late Tolbert, as he served in his government as head of a parastatal, LPMC. Like Boakai, Tolbert served as Vice President under the late President William V.S. Tubman for 19 unbroken years and took office as President after Tubman’s death in July 1971. As he said on his campaign trail, he and the main opposition UP are on a “rescue mission”. But instead, they immediately began displaying lavish lifestyles and amassing wealth by constructing mansions, sources of which yet to be accounted for.

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) in collaboration with the Interim Secretariat and working group for Broader Market Recognition (BMR) convened the second policy forum in Bali on Broader Market Recognition of National Systems. The Policy was a follow up to the “Creating Incentives through Broader Market Recognition of National Systems” session at Indonesia Pavilion at CoP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, November 2022, where coalition countries firstly announced its BMR Joint Statement. The Broader Market Recognition Coalition (BMRC) consists of tropical countries who presented the joint statement at COP27. Such limited global recognition does not adequately reward tropical countries that invest in national systems for strengthened forest governance. There is general agreement that further efforts must be made to ensure that these national systems achieve full international market recognition.
