The primary rounds of the competition are conducted at the Paynesville Town Hall and the grand finale at the Monrovia City Hall theatre. And winners of the Spelling Bee will walk away with awesome prizes and benefits such as cash benefits, books, pens, computers, one-year local scholarships as well as a full international undergraduates program for the first winner. Liberia’s Oldest Church Celebrates 200 Anniversary with Pledge to Transform Lives, Renew Communities
Monrovia – Liberia’s historic Providence Baptist Church today, February 10 begins its bicentennial celebration with a new vision set on transforming lives and renewing communities “intentionally and radically.”At a press conference on Tuesday, the Senior Pastor of the Church, the Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves, Jr. also called on Liberians at home and abroad to unite and a build a prosperous nation guided by God. The Bicentennial celebration is being held under the theme, “Bridge to Providence!”The Providence Baptist Church, known as the cornerstone of the nation played a pivotal role in the formation of Liberia. It was in the Church that the historic Declaration of Independence was signed. They, in separate remarks stressed the importance of the celebration and called on Liberians at home and abroad to join the events.

Liberia: Elections Commission Board of Commissioners Reaffirms Frank Foko’s Victory in District 9 By-election
MONROVIA – The Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission, (NEC) has reaffirmed Mr. Frank Saah Foko as the winner of the December 2021 electoral District 9, Montserrado County Representative by-election. The unanimous ruling of the Board of NEC was read on Tuesday by Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah. However, lawyers representing the Complainant Fubi F. Henries of the Collaborating Political Parties, CPP, led by Cllr. Chairperson Browne Lansanah said the complainant Fubi Henries failed to establish that irregularity and fraud occurred during the Representative By-Election on December 8 and that could change outcome of the election. The Board cited several opinions from the Supreme Court including the case Sando Johnson versus NEC decided December 2005, Brumskine et al versus NEC decided 21 December 2017, and Fayd versus Dennie, 39 LLR 587, decided 1999.

Liberia: FLY & LINSU Launch National Youth & Students Monitoring Taskforce
MONROVIA – Two youth and students advocacy groups, The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) and the Liberia National Students Union (LINSU) Tuesday launched the National Youth and Students Taskforce with a call from the population to support their quest for genuine advocacy. The aim of the Taskforce, among other things, is to elevate the issues on budget tracking, with key focus on education, security, justice, and the rule of law. As part of the initiative, the two bodies are also expected to begin a nationwide monitoring and budget tracking of key sectors including; health, education and the rule of law. The youth and students umbrella body stressed that they will endeavor to foster genuine advocacy hereby aimed at digging into impacts of the deliverables of the Government of Liberia’s National Budgetary Allocation on the livelihood of the common people. Meanwhile, the intense nationwide youth and students tour which is expected to begin On February 15, 2021, is under the theme: Advocacy through monitoring.

Civil Society Groups Want Senator Varney Sherman Stripped from Influential Judiciary Committee’s Chairmanship
Monrovia – Liberia’s largest civil society platform, the National Civil Society Council of Liberia and the Liberia CSOs Anti-Corruption Coalition have petitioned the Liberian to remove Senator H. Varney Sherman of Grand Cape Mount County as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. On December 9, 2020, marking International Anti-Corruption Day, the United Sates Department of Treasury placed Senator Sherman on economic sanction for his alleged role in a thread of bribery and corruption related cases. Harry Varney Gboto-Nambi Sherman is removed as Chairman of the Liberian Senate Judiciary Committee. The Liberia CSOs Anti-Corruption Coalition and the National Civil Society Council of Liberia will continue to advocate and promote transparency, accountability and integrity in the governance framework of the Republic of Liberia,” vowed. In the statement signed by James Koryor, national coordinator of the Liberia CSOs Anti-Corruption Coalition, James S. France Assures Liberia’s Ministry of Defense of Cooperation in the Security Sector
Barclay Training Center, Monrovia – Liberian Defense boss, Major General Daniel D. Ziankahn, Jr., (Rtd. ),has called for reinforced relationship between the French Defense Sector and its Liberian counterpart. The Liberian Defense Chief expressed satisfaction over the impact of maritime training on the Liberian Coast Guard. Also making remarks, Colonel Xavier Clochard said his government’s interests are in the areas of training for MINUSMA, Maritime Training, French Training and Research and Development (R&D). He informed Minister Ziankahn that personnel of Liberia’s defense sector stand to benefit from trainings that are tailored to meet reality regarding emerging threats, especially in the area of intelligence gathering and sharing.

Landmark Contribution from Liberian Alumni
On 8 February, the World Maritime University Alumni Association of Liberia (WMUAAL) presented a donation to the WMU Endowment Fund. Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, expressed her deep appreciation to WMUAAL, noting that this is a landmark gift as the first contribution from a WMU Alumni Association to the University’s Endowment Fund. She noted that WMU graduates are working in diverse areas in Liberian society and that their contribution to Liberia’s post-war development is highly commendable. We see education and capacity development at the World Maritime University in Sweden as a key part of this. To date, there are a total of 51 WMU alumni from Liberia.

Brownie Samukai and two other co-appellants and sentenced them to two years in prison each for misapplication of US$1.1 million intended for the Armed Forces of Liberia. Mr. Samukai, the former Minister of Defense had hoped to have been exonerated by the High Court following his conviction by the lower court in 2020. But the Defendants took appeal at the Supreme Court and they (serving now as appellants), justified that they acted in line with the Constitution and relevant laws. And many of Samukai’s supporters have still not fathomed how come his pending appeal case outside the political arena suddenly surfaced on the Supreme Court’s priority docket. They term the judgement against him as a witch hunt by the Weah- government through the Supreme Court.

Liberia: House Probes How MNG Gold Obtained License for Underground Mining
MONROVIA – The House of Representatives Committee on Concession and Natural Resources says it has investigated and established that the Ministry of Mines has given authorization to MNG Gold to carryout underground mining in its place of operations. The initial term of the underground mining authorization falls within the timeframe of the current Class ‘A’ mining license. “It was established that the Ministry of Mines gave them the authorization to do underground mining. “If it is established that the awarding of the permit has a fault, whatever was not done illegally was not done at all.”On July 20, 2020, the Ministry of Mines granted to MNG Gold authorization to carryout underground mining for gold. In 2015, a Class ‘A’ mining License to MNG which was in compliance with, the terms and conditions of the class a mining License.

Rep. Samuel Korgar Frowns on Foreigners Engaging in Retail Businesses
MONROVIA – Representative Samuel Korgar (PUP-Dist#5 Nimba County) has alarmed over what he calls unfair business practices by foreign businesses, specifically Chinese businesses against struggling Liberian businesses. Rep. Korgar who chairs the House of Representatives Committee on Commerce and Industry in an interview at his Capitol Building offices said that the “Chinese are killing Liberian businesses”. He is also calling on Liberian businesses to provide the needed information to help the committee properly function to bring relief to struggling Liberian businesses. A law to strengthened 26 businesses was proposed in 2018 dubbed, the Liberian “Business and Economic Empowerment Act of 2018” introduced by Deputy House Speaker Cllr. It is styled “Liberian Business and Economic Empowerment Act of 2018” and was submitted and sponsored by Grand Kru County District # 2 Representative Cllr.
