The 2018 trip to Syria by four TDs, including president-elect Catherine Connolly, was organised by Elaine Daly, sister of Clare Daly, the former TD and MEP has said. Ms Connolly was asked on several occasions who organised the trip but did not answer the question. Ms Connolly travelled to Syria with the then TDs Clare Daly, Mick Wallace and Maureen O’Sullivan among others. Asked during the campaign about the meeting, Ms Connolly said she was not aware of the presence of the militia leader. During the presidential campaign the Irish Syria Solidarity Movement criticised Ms Connolly for saying she had been “shown around by Palestinians” at Yarmouk during the 2018 trip.

But I still emailed BHP to find out more about an approach that appealed to my inner autocrat. For me, one of the excellent things about working for a newspaper with endless deadlines is that there is rarely time for people to faff around in pointless meetings. It advises organisations to have a meeting doomsday, or full-bore calendar cleanse, all the better to make meetings a last resort instead of the default. “The main aim is to have the right participants in the meeting and to have an outcome,” said a spokeswoman. I admit that this sort of thing will not suit all organisations and would cause a minor riot at some.

In the UK, a major reform of the house-buying system has been proposed by the Labour Government. Photograph: iStockFor most people, the process of buying a house can be quite disheartening. The lack of housing supply across the country means houses often sell for way above asking price and usually after an excruciating bidding war. While the Government promises to address the supply issue, is there anything that needs to change about the way we buy houses? These are Brady’s reflections while surfing in Lisbon on her decision to move home to Ireland after three years. I’ve wanted to leave Lisbon for a while now but it wasn’t always that way. I could never afford my own apartment in Ireland and moved house four times over the course of a year before I left for Lisbon. Andy Farrell’s mood is always an accurate barometer, as was evident in the head coach’s frustrated mood after a decidedly uneven 41-10 win over Japan. “It was almost like a Charity Shield game,” added Farrell in likening the game to a seasonal warm-up, “and that’s that shouldn’t be the case. Anytime you play for Ireland, it should be a Test match where you go out there with proper intention from the start and play your game.
