IWT Statement14th March 2024Irish Wildlife Trust refuses to accept cash over convictionThe Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) is disappointed to learn that in a recent wildlife crime court case a successful conviction for the destruction of a badger sett was altered on appeal to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The IWT who were one of the court ordered recipients of this donation, to the sum of €5,000, have declined the donation due to the circumstance of this case. The NPWS barrister stated that a conviction is more beneficial “because it sends out a message”. This is a serious wildlife crime. The Irish Wildlife Trust would like to see the full weight of the law being used by courts in wildlife crime cases in order to send a clear message that the Irish court system values nature and is willing to play their part in stopping rampant wildlife crime and environmental destruction in Ireland.

The European Central Bank will probably start cutting rates during the spring, between April and June 21, as the "victory" against inflation is in sight, French central bank head and ECB policymaker Francois Villeroy de Galhau has said. He also re-iterated that the inflation rate in France should fall to 2% next year. Meanwhile, ECB Governing Council member Pierre Wunsch said the ECB will have to gamble soon with an interest rate cut even though wage inflation and price rises for services are uncomfortably high. He said the ECB was getting to a point where it could react to inflation heading in the right direction. Eurozone inflation fell in February to 2.6%, but underlying price growth remained stubbornly high.

Bright colours and extravagant hats take over Cheltenham Festival fashionBy Prudence Wade, PARainy weather at Cheltenham Festival didn’t stop racegoer fashion from being bright and bold. If racegoers weren’t wearing bright colours, then they were experimenting with print. The day has typically encouraged female racegoers to wear their finest high-end fashion – but that’s also shifted, as the day now celebrates ‘slow fashion’. So vintage looks and classic outfits are all on the table – but one thing that definitely hasn’t changed is the vast array of hats at Cheltenham. There is no formal dress code at Cheltenham, instead the organisers say racegoers should come ‘dressed to feel your best’.
