The European Commission said it would present a communication on managing climate risks early this week. The EEA report says several climate risks have already reached critical levels. If decisive action is not taken now, it says, most climate risks could reach critical or catastrophic levels by the end of this century.

Scrapping the 'pernicious' tax on buying shares would help revive Britain's flailing stock market, according to leading figures in the City. Investors currently pay 0.5 per cent in stamp duty on the price of London-listed shares they buy – or £5 for every £1,000 invested in a UK company. With many other countries either imposing a much lower levy or no charge on share purchases, critics argue the London stock market is at a disadvantage. The Chancellor refused to cut stamp duty on share purchases last week – a move dubbed a 'missed opportunity' by the boss of trading platform Interactive Investor. The debate comes amid fears about the health of the stock market as foreign predators circle poorly valued London-listed firms on the hunt for bargains.

The public research university is said to be the second-largest university in the UK by total enrolment and the largest by postgraduate enrolment. Michelle Shipworth claims she was removed from an academic module on data from the Global Slavery Index because of concerns she was ‘anti-Chinese’. These led to Mr Strachan taking action against her because the university needed to “retain a good reputation among future Chinese applicants”, the report said. Mr Strachan has said Shipworth had been accused of “being biased against students from a single country – China”. UCL has more than 15,000 Chinese students and 400 staff from mainland China, and fees can be as much as £40,000 a year, compared to the annual UK cap at around £9,250, the report said.

Liverpool and Manchester City play out enthralling draw at AnfieldBy Carl Markham, PAAlexis Mac Allister’s penalty earned Liverpool a dramatic 1-1 draw against Manchester City that left the destiny of the Premier League still very much up in the air. A point apiece means Arsenal remain top of the table on goal difference from Jurgen Klopp’s side but they have to go to the Etihad in three weeks with the gap to City currently only a point. The Argentina midfielder struck from the spot to cancel out John Stones’ first Premier League goal since April. Whether that will remain the same after Jurgen Klopp’s departure in the summer remains to be seen but Pep Guardiola has still not won at Anfield in front of fans. Nevertheless he left the happier of the two managers after enduring significant second-half pressure.
