Air pollution has improved over past 20 years — but still above WHO levels

Air pollution levels have improved in Europe over the past 20 years, research has found. The study, led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), looked at pollution levels in more than 1,400 regions in 35 European countries, representing 543 million people. During the study period, PM2.5 and PM10 levels were highest in northern Italy and eastern Europe. High NO2 levels were recorded in northern Italy and in some areas of western Europe, such as in the south of the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands. Methane emissions have held around this level since 2019, according to the IEA's Global Methane Tracker.
