Hooker Dan Sheehan set Ireland on course for glory – and a 10th successive win over Scotland – with an opportunistic first-half score, while Jack Crowley kicked seven points. Crowley squandered a long-range penalty to stretch the slender advantage as resolute Scotland remained relatively untroubled, while offering a threat on the counter attack. Scotland flanker Andy Christie superbly halted the weaving Calvin Nash with the try line in touching distance before rusty Ireland replacement Garry Ringrose inexplicably fumbled. Ringrose, making his first appearance of the tournament following a shoulder injury, atoned with a lung-busting intercept run which led to Ireland’s crucial second try. Robbie Henshaw was adjudged to have been held up on the line in the immediate aftermath before Porter subsequently powered over from a tap-and-go penalty following a yellow card for Ewan Ashman.

Video / Sky SportIreland won successive Six Nations by overcoming a bold Scotland, nerves and the late withdrawal of key man Hugo Keenan to prevail 17-13 at Lansdowne Road on Saturday. The Irish appeared to break Scotland’s rugged resistance with 15 minutes to go after its second converted try for 17-6. Even though the Scots hadn’t beaten Ireland since 2017 or won at Lansdowne Road since 1998, they dominated early but without being clinical. Ireland overcame its nerves to grow into the game and pressure Scotland into making an energy-sapping 238 tackles. Ireland 17 (Dan Sheehan, Andrew Porter tries; Jack Crowley 2 conversions, penalty), Scotland 13 (Huw Jones try; Finn Russell conversion, 2 penalties).

Rory McIlroy’s Players title bid fades after erratic second round at SawgrassBy Phil Casey, PA Golf CorrespondentRory McIlroy’s bid for a second Players Championship victory suffered a potentially fatal blow as Scottie Scheffler played through the pain barrier to keep his hopes of an historic title defence alive. McIlroy held a share of the overnight lead following an opening 65 at Sawgrass, but could only add a second round of 73 to slump eight shots behind US Open champion Wyndham Clark. Scheffler had earlier received treatment from a PGA Tour physio during a second round of 69 which left him six behind Clark, who reached halfway at 14 under par thanks to a second-consecutive 65. “I hit a shot on my second hole today and I felt a little something in my neck,” Scheffler, who had started from the 10th hole, explained. So, for me it’s just about trying to stay patient, just keep doing what I’m doing and go from there.”
