The Tory frontbencher argued the Irish government’s stance was “hard to reconcile” given previous positions it had taken and its own record of dealing with Troubles-related cases. The criticism by the Northern Ireland Office minister came after the new body responsible for investigating unresolved deaths from the turbulent period became operational. The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR) was created by the Government’s legacy legislation, which was introduced in the face of widespread opposition from political parties, victims’ organisations in Northern Ireland and the Irish government. Separately, the Irish Government brought an interstate legal case against the UK, claiming the new law breached the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). That case is still to be heard.

Senior Coach Jacques Nienaber: 'I always think when you play in a semi-final and your opposition is of that calibre they are always going to come back.' Photograph: Ben Brady/InphoThere is a constant rhythm to Jacques Nienaber’s give-and-take over Leinster’s even, uneven performance. On the one hand, the team needs to improve in many areas, and on the other Northampton are a fabulous side. “My thought during the whole game was listen, ‘we need to win this game’. [ ‘Something almost horrific happened’: English media reacts to Leinster’s win over Northampton ][ Holy cow!

Vivienne ClarkeMinister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue is to introduce regulations in the coming months to ban the use of electric dog collars. The move follows months of “significant consultation” on this serious welfare issue, he told RTÉ radio’s Today Show. The regulations will not have an effect on electric fences as animals can avoid them. The target is electric shock collars which can be used on dogs and cats to control their behaviour and in some circumstances can be used for training. However, people who already have remote controlled electric collars on their animals will not be required to remove them.

Manchester United humiliated after thumping Palace winBy George Sessions, PAA Michael Olise masterclass helped Crystal Palace complete a first ever Premier League double over Manchester United and inflict further misery on Erik ten Hag’s team with a 4-0 drubbing in south London. Injury-hit United have won only two of their last 10 league matches and could be set for a lowest ever Premier League finish. Two more Olise efforts were repelled, one accidentally by his team-mate Mateta before Andre Onana saved after another fine Palace move. United had to wait until the 51st minute to have their first shot on target, but Antony’s 22-yard curler was routine for Henderson. Those fleeting forays for United only momentarily interrupted the Olise show as his skill should have resulted in a third for Palace, but Eze curled wide.

Peter Hebblethwaite repeatedly told MPs on the Business and Trade Committee that P&O's workers were not being exploited, while resisting calls for an independent investigation into the company's employment practices. The chief executive, who admitted he could not live on £4.87 per hour, also revealed he earned £508,000 including a bonus of £183,000 last year. Mr Hebblethwaite said: "We are paying considerably ahead of the international minimum standard. We believe that it is right that as an international business operating in international waters, we should be governed by international law." Mr Hebblethwaite's appearance before MPs came two years after P&O Ferries fired 786 of its staff and replaced them with low-paid workers who are employed by an external crewing agency.

A second security source said: “There’s a few of them [the 20] that are real players, but not that many. Norwegian far-right terrorist Anders Breivik was praised on a Irish far-right Telegram group. “I think the State has been slow to respond,” one senior security source said.
