Woman (80s) in serious condition after attack in LouthBy Cillian Sherlock, PAUpdated at 20:00A man remains in custody in relation to an attack on an elderly woman in Louth on Friday. The pensioner in her 80s - who is understood to have been attacked with a hatchet - is in a serious condition in hospital. Two other women were also injured during the incident at a home in the Glenwood area of Dundalk shortly before 1pm this afternoon. A man has been arrested and is being questioned at a Garda station in Louth.

Investigation after earthquake recorded on seismometer in Donegal
Stephen MaguireAn investigation has been launched after a minor earthquake reading was registered in Donegal last night. Many people heard the sound of what appeared to be an earthquake within the Ballybofey and surrounding areas just before 8pm last night. Local schoolteacher Brendan O’Donoghue, who operates the seismometer equipment at St Columba’s College in Stranorlar, confirmed a very clear signal showed on the equipment at that time. Mr O'Donoghue has recorded earthquakes from around the world which normally register on the school's seismometer equipment. He is now asking anyone who heard or felt what they thought was an earthquake to contact him on bodonoghue@stcolumbasstranorlar.ie

Crude oil prices fall this week but wholesale gas increases
Crude oil prices are trading at three-month lows after weaker-than-expected US jobs data, although European wholesale gas prices ended the week higher on demand for heating, following the cold weather system across most of Europe. European wholesale gas prices settled at around €31 per megawatt on Friday, up over the past week. Higher rates typically weigh on the economy and can reduce oil demand. Further ahead, the next meeting of Opec+ oil producers — members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia — is set for June 1. Three sources from the Opec+ group said it could extend its voluntary oil output cuts beyond June, if oil demand does not increase.

United could therefore miss out on European football entirely next season if they are overtaken by both Newcastle and Chelsea before the end of the season.

Enoch Burke says newspaper article about him was a 'malicious hit job'
Speaking at the close of his defamation action on Friday, Mr Burke told the High Court the newspaper made a “grave and serious libel” and defamed him in an October 2022 article about his movement within prison. The defendants deny Mr Burke was defamed by the article but acknowledge “minor” errors occurred. Senior counsel for the defendants, Ronan Lupton, submitted there is an “elephant in the room” in that Mr Burke comes from Mountjoy to vindicate his good name. Cross-examining, Mr Burke asked her if she accepts that it was false to say he was moved for his own safety. In his closing submissions to the court, Mr Burke said the way the defence has been conducted has led to the defamation “percolating” again during the trial.

Taoiseach defends handling of asylum seeker accommodation

Around a dozen asylum seekers arrived at St Mary’s Church Park in Ballsbridge on Thursday night. The men had been told by the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) that there was no longer accommodation available. The Government has been struggling to accommodate the rising number of asylum seekers arriving into the State. “The conversation about migration can’t just be one about accommodation, because no matter how much accommodation you have, if it’s just a conversation about accommodation, accommodation will fill.

Herald: HC stays ODPs for five villages in Bardez pending final hearing on July 8
Hearing a civil application filed by Goa Foundation through its Secretary Claude Alvares and Roshan Mathias, the Court said, “We direct pending hearing and final disposal of the petition, operation of December ODPs shall remain stayed. No permissions, clearances, or change of zones shall be granted based on the December ODPs. Construction, development, conversions and zone changes in the five villages should strictly abide by Regional Plan Goa-2021, as directed in the interim order dated February 14, 2024. The Court stated that the North Goa Planning and Development Authority (NGPDA), North Goa Collector and TCP Department officials would be responsible for ensuring this. The matter has been posted for final hearing on July 8, 2024, high on board subject to overnight part-heard matters.

Pace of expansion slows but services sector continues to grow
The Irish services sector continued to expand in April but the pace of growth and job creation slowed. The latest AIB Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) survey for services showed the tech sector was a key source of weakness last month while financial services powered ahead. The slow down in job creation was also a feature of the manufacturing sector data earlier in the week. The latest data means Irish services – which captures everything from banking to cafes – has been in continuous expansion for three years and two months, even with the country ‘officially’ in recession last year. With inflation easing across the economy, the latest data shows wages and fuel were the main reported sources of higher input costs in April.
