However, the quality of roads and transportation is poor. Most roads are of two-lane configuration and in terrible shape, thereby prone to creating congestion. More important, policy is weighed in favour of passenger cars over mass, rapid public transportation.

66 held as raids at Bangalore Turf Club reveal ‘illegal betting, GST fraud’; Rs 3.45 crore seized
The raids were conducted following a tip-off about irregularities at the club located at Race Course Road. According to police sources, CCB sleuths received credible information that illegal betting was taking place at the club. Names in the FIR registered at High Grounds police station include Srihari Enterprises, Banashankari Enterprises, Surya and Co, Paras and Co, Aditya Enterprises, Tejaswini Enterprises and Maruti Enterprises, among others. According to the FIR, the stalls mentioned allegedly indulged in illegal betting. It invoked provisions under the Indian Penal Code, Karnataka Race Betting Act and the Karnataka Police Act.

District attorney defends the qualifications of a prosecutor hired in Trump's Georgia election case
ATLANTA (AP) — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Sunday defended the qualifications of a special prosecutor she hired for her case against Donald Trump and others over efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia after a defense lawyer accused Willis of professional impropriety. The motion seeks to have the indictment dismissed and to disqualify Willis and Wade and their offices from further prosecuting the case. At the church, Willis did not address the allegations of an improper relationship. Merchant's filing offered no proof of the alleged relationship or trips that she said that Willis and Wade had taken together. Pete Skandalakis, a former district attorney who is executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council, said district attorneys do not have to seek permission before hiring a special prosecutor.

Travellers shifting to offline mode after GST on non-AC bus rides
The imposition of 5% GST on non-AC auto-rickshaw or bus rides bought online on platforms such as Ola, Uber, MakeMyTrip and redBus is seeing price-sensitive consumers shifting offline to save tax, industry executives said. The proportion of such transactions fell from 41% of the total online bookings of bus tickets in the fourth quarter of 2021 to 22% in the three months ended, three executives said, requesting anonymity. “The imposition of GST bus tickets purchased though ECOs in a way dissuades consumers from using online systems, something against the government’s Digital India mission,” he said. “The large-hearted intent of the GST council to exempt non-AC bus fares from GST levy was to give relief to the poor and bottom of the pyramid that largely use such a service. “Digital penetration in transport system is deeply affected by non-uniform GST policy implementation, where the online platforms are mandated to charge a 5% GST and offline modes have no GST charges,” one of the expert said.

The eruption just before 8 a.m. Sunday came after a swarm of earthquakes near the town of Grindavik, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said. “Lava is flowing a few hundred meters north of the town, this is 400 to 500 meters," Kristín Jónsdóttir from the Icelandic Meteorological Office told Iceland’s RUV television. But the walls of the barriers built north of Grindavik have been breached and lava is on the move toward the community, the meteorological office said. Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, averages an eruption every four to five years.

Indian women: Climbing the U curve
Much concern is voiced about the low labour force participation of Indian women. But East Asian manufacturing assembly lines, that largely employed women, improved their work participation. So work participation is higher in rural than in urban areas and it fell in post-reform India as incomes rose. The 2022-23 Report shows it at 37 per cent (urban 25.4 per cent, rural 41.5 per cent) in 2023, risen from a 2017-18 low of 23.3 per cent (urban 20.4 per cent, rural 24.6 per cent). If Army Chief believes Pakistan carrying out terrorism in J&K then why Indian military is not in Pakistan to eliminate “India specific Pak terrorist infra-structure”. By Hem Raj Jain
Through a press conference, Indian Army chief General Manoj Pande on Thursday said that Pakistan is trying to aggregate terrorism in the Rajouri-Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir (as reported at https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/army-chief-general-manoj-pande-army-day-speaks-on-terror-activities-in-jammu-and-kashmirs-rajouri-and-poonch-2487487-2024-01-11 and https://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2023/dec/25/army-chief-manoj-pande-visits-poonch-exhorts-commanders-to-conduct-ops-in-most-professional-manner-2644830.html ). But this is objectionable on the part of India as per international law. If the Indian Army Chief believes that Pakistan is carrying out terrorism in J&K (through proxies) then why is the Indian military not in Pakistan to eliminate “India centric Pak terrorist infra-structure” . Rather India should send its military in Pakistan to arrest and bring 6 (5 of its military and government and State functionaries / authorities namely Army Chief of Pakistan, ISI Chief of Pakistan , Defense Minister of Pakistan, Prime MInister of Pakistan and President of Pakistan and sixth the head of terrorist organization) to India for producing them before “International court of Justice” (ICJ). If India doesn’t do so then it will also be guilty of spreading terrorism in the region by acts of omission which is equally condemnable as the act of commission in which Pakistan is allegedly (as per Indian Army Chief Gen. Pande) involved in spreading terrorism in J&K.
