Speaking to journalists in Accra on Thursday, February 5, Opoku stated that the Minority caucus was deeply concerned about the hardship cocoa farmers face, as they have not been paid for over three months. According to him, Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) have been unable to pay farmers because funds for cocoa already delivered to COCOBOD have not been paid for. According to Opoku, some cocoa farmers were even forced to postpone Christmas celebrations for the first time in the history of the country just because they had not been paid. He further alleged that excessive administrative expenditure and widespread staff transfers within COCOBOD had aggravated its financial woes, even as cocoa farmers remained unpaid. Business News of Thursday, 5 February 2026Source: www.ghanaweb.comThe Licensed Cocoa Buyers Association of Ghana (LICOBAG) has raised concerns over what it describes as excessive political interference at the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), warning that the trend poses a serious threat to the sustainability of the country’s cocoa industry. Speaking on behalf of LICOBAG, Executive Secretary Victus Dzah painted a sobering picture of an institution he said has lost its professional lustre due to deepening politicisation. He lamented that political exposure, which was previously limited to the Chief Executive, has now permeated multiple layers of the organisation. “Hitherto, only the Chief Executive was politically exposed, and with time, the three Deputy Chief Executives also became political appointees,” he stated. According to LICOBAG, the absence of security of tenure within COCOBOD has fostered instability and weakened staff morale, undermining efficiency across the cocoa value chain.
