However, the GIADEC CEO stressed that the current process forms part of a broader national strategy to reposition Ghana’s aluminium sector under the Integrated Aluminium Industry (IAI) agenda. Twumasi Ankrah disclosed that Cabinet, in May 2022, approved plans for GIADEC and VALCO to identify and engage a strategic investor to inject about US$600 million into the company. The GIADEC CEO further explained that VALCO remains a critical anchor in Ghana’s long-term aluminium industrialization agenda. Twumasi Ankrah reaffirmed that VALCO remains a strategic national asset and is not being sold.

He further revealed that members of the community often use the school compound as a pathway to the cemetery during burial activities, sometimes within school hours. He stressed that beyond disrupting the learning environment, prolonged exposure to the odour could have serious long-term health implications for pupils and staff. They said the stench occasionally leads to illness among kindergarten and lower primary pupils whose classrooms are closest to the cemetery. They appealed to traditional authorities and relevant government agencies to either relocate the cemetery or the school, or construct a fence around the school to reduce health risks and limit the negative impact of burial activities on their education.
