Business News of Wednesday, 15 September 2021Source: GNAThe Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana on Tuesday welcomed a decision by CMA CGM Group, an international container transportation, and shipping company, to suspend the increment of freight charges effective September 9, 2021, to February 1, 2022. Mr Awingobit said: “the Association which has been fighting shipping lines over the astronomical increment in freight charges at the detriment of our members, see this directive as a sigh of relief”. The Association commended the CMA CGM Group for taking the bold step after acknowledging the massive investment they had already made in terms of increasing capacity to meet the demand of their customers. This, the Association, believes would go a long way to bring some relief to importers who had been affected by the unexplained increment in the past. “We urge all members (Importers) to cash in on the latest development which began this month, and patronize the services of the various shipping lines under CMA CGM,” it said.

According to him, Send Ghana has been unhappy with the government’s laid-back approach towards the release of funds for the programme. He recalled how in 2019, they had lumped pressure on the government until beneficiaries under the 60th and 61st cycle of LEAP were paid. “You may recall that in November 2019, SEND Ghana addressed the media where he commended government for heeding our call to pay the 61st cycle LEAP grant after they were delayed. Indeed, in that, we realized some 30,000 households with over 125,000 beneficiaries were denied payment during the 60th cycle of the grant. “And what happened was that government paid heed to our call and beneficiaries received double amount, that is for the 60th and then the 61st cycle payment,” he said.

According to the association’s president, Patrick Ebo Bonful, the move will enhance the public’s resolve and confidence in purchasing local building materials for use. “Government ought to give contracts that will insist on the use of local materials and that will create an industry around the local materials”. This has also impacted on the cost of building materials with Ghana largely dependent on the importation of building materials for construction. Mr. Ebo Bonful said the solution lies in the adoption of local building materials, but that may not come easily. “Government ought to give contracts that will insist on the use of local materials and that will create an industry around the local materials”.

“We see a lot of good initiatives but we often compromise our system with politics. Unfortunately, the truth is, any nation that does not enforce its laws or get its systems to work is bound to fail. “There are some that may not want this because if the systems work, it will inconvenience them, and somehow affect their political fortunes but I want to challenge you to be more interested in making the systems work than politicking. Choose to make Accra work instead of engaging in partisanship,” he said. Henry Quartey has been on a number of initiatives to rid the city of ills that impede the development of the city.
