General News of Monday, 9 February 2026Source: www.ghanaweb.comAn anti-corruption campaigner, Vitus Azeem, has urged the government to reconsider its plans to rename Kotoka International Airport, proposing instead that the facility be named after Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, February 9, 2026, Azeem said he would have preferred the renaming exercise to acknowledge Dr Nkrumah’s lasting contributions to Ghana’s liberation and nation-building. Rename Kotoka International Airport after Dr Kwame Nkrumah - AzeemAzeem also dismissed concerns that changing the airport’s name would place an excessive financial burden on the state, noting that the process could be done gradually and in phases. Addressing fears of ethnic interpretations, Azeem stressed that Dr Nkrumah’s legacy belongs to the entire country and should not be viewed through a tribal lens. While acknowledging Accra International Airport as an acceptable alternative, Azeem said his strong preference remains Kwame Nkrumah International Airport.

In a report drawn from the statement sighted by asaaseradio.com, the Coalition of Unemployed Tertiary Graduates with Disabilities indicated that hundreds of qualified graduates have remained jobless for more than six years despite holding degrees in fields such as Education, Law, Administration and Information Technology. Unemployed Graduates with Disability calls off demonstrationWhile Ghana’s national unemployment rate is estimated at 13 per cent, the group said unemployment among persons with disabilities in the formal sector is nearly double. It stressed that only about 27 per cent of working-age persons with disabilities are employed, compared to more than 56 per cent of able-bodied Ghanaians. “We continue to see systems that favour able-bodied applicants over qualified persons with disabilities,” the statement noted, describing the trend as a major barrier to inclusion in public sector employment. As part of its demands, the group is calling for an immediate roadmap to absorb the backlog of unemployed graduates with disabilities into the public sector, strict enforcement of employment quotas, and incentives for private companies.

General News of Monday, 9 February 2026Source: www.ghanaweb.comA former Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahiru Hammond, has launched a blistering attack on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that the party should dissolve itself if it genuinely opposes coup makers. According to adomonline.com report on February 9, 2026, Hammond described the proposed renaming as misplaced, insisting that the government should instead focus on more pressing national challenges, including economic difficulties, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits. According to him, symbolic actions such as changing the airport’s name do little to address the daily struggles of the ordinary Ghanaian. “The founder of the PNDC, now NDC, came to power through a coup. So, if the party is against coup makers like Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, then they should collapse the NDC and form a new one,” Hammond asserted.

Politics of Monday, 9 February 2026Source: ghanaiantimes.com.ghThe Kontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, says former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia could win the 2028 general elections if the performance of the current government becomes worse than that of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. According to him, Dr Bawumia’s chances of returning to power would improve only if key economic indicators deteriorate beyond previous levels. He mentioned interest rates, stating that if rates rise above the levels recorded under the previous administration, people may begin to compare governments and reconsider their choices. Nana Obodade III further pointed to the debt-to-GDP ratio, noting that if it exceeds the levels inherited by the current government, it could weaken public confidence. He argued that only if similar or worse governance issues emerge under the current government would voters consider returning the former Vice President to power.
