"There were people screaming, and then people lying on the ground, probably dead," said 21-year-old Samuel Rapp, who saw the aftermath of the fire. The head of the local canton's police, Frederic Gisler, said around 40 people were presumed to be dead and 115 were injured, most of them seriously. VICTIMS FROM SEVERAL COUNTRIESWitnesses said many of those celebrating in the bar appeared to be from different countries. Video footage showed lines of ambulances queuing and helicopters landing to take victims to nearby hospitals and specialist burn units in other Swiss cities, including Lausanne and Zurich.

Police arrest suspect for impersonating soldier

Five-member armed robbery syndicate arrested in Accra and Tema

Kofane stunner earns Cameroon victory over Mozambique

VAT rate cut to 20%, COVID Levy gone as new tax act takes effect January 2026

This comes after the abolition of the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, marking an end to the pandemic-era tax measure. Under the new arrangement, both NHIL and GETFund levies will be treated as input tax deductions. “The VAT rate remains at 15% while the NHIL and GETFund levies stay at 2.5% each, bringing the total effective VAT rate to 20%,” the statement read. The authority further announced the abolition of the VAT Flat Rate Scheme (VFRS), replacing it with a unified and more transparent VAT structure.
