Somalia’s ambassador to the United Nations has accused Ethiopian troops of illegal incursions across the countries’ shared border, blaming it for clashes with local security forces. Ethiopia has about 3,000 soldiers in Somalia as part of an African Union peacekeeping mission (ATMIS) fighting al Shabaab. Over the weekend, Ethiopian soldiers entered Somalia’s Hiraan region to monitor al Shabaab threats. Somalia does not believe the Ethiopian troop stepped on its soil in good faith and, as a result, has requested the postponement of the next ATMIS troop withdrawal from July to September. Relations soured between both countries after Ethiopia offered recognition to Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of Somalia, in exchange for the leasing of a coastline.

By Eyob Asfaw GemechuIt has been two years since the commission for national dialogue started its operation publicly. Notwithstanding its indisputable role for sustainable development, the various reports of Ethiopia underscored as national dialogue is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16). The key argument is that, by virtue of the nature of national dialogue undertaken elsewhere demands decentering the ownership of the national dialogue beyond the public sector, particularly the executive branch of the government. In corollary, Tegbrau Yared argued that the National Dialogue commission was an offshoot of the’ Multi-stakeholder Initiative for National Dialogue-Ethiopia (MIND-Ethiopia). China was a major contributor, accounting for nearly half of all FDI projects, with public-private partnerships (PPP) also playing a crucial part.
