Ethiopia and Eritrea are historical adversaries, though Eritrean troops fought alongside their Ethiopian counterparts in a recent two-year conflict against Tigray. A group of United Nations investigators and experts called on Ethiopia on Thursday to halt the deportation of Eritreans and the arbitrary detention of Eritrean refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. The group also condemned what they called the “summary expulsion of hundreds of Eritreans” by Ethiopia at the end of June. Ethiopia’s official Human Rights Commission said on June 24 that it was monitoring the forcible return of about 200 Eritreans. “According to several credible sources, the group included both registered and unregistered refugees and asylum seekers,” the experts’ statement said.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met in Cairo on Thursday to discuss the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). In a joint statement, the leaders said they would do “all the necessary efforts” to reach an agreement within four months. Ethiopia also reiterated its commitment not to harm Egypt and Sudan’s share of water during the filling of the dam. The GERD is a controversial project that has been the subject of years of negotiations between Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan. Egypt is concerned that the dam will reduce its share of Nile water, while Ethiopia sees the dam as a vital source of hydroelectric power.

Egypt is seeking ways to make an elusive cease-fire hold in the bloody Sudan conflict that has killed thousands and forced Sudan’s residents into at least six neighboring countries as refugees. Leaders from Sudan's seven key neighbors met Thursday in Cairo at the behest of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, who is hoping to prevent the three-month-old crisis from worsening and spilling into other regional states. Arab media reported that Sissi is trying to implement binding mechanisms with regional players in the conflict to make a cease-fire work, where previous attempts have failed. Sissi told regional leaders at the opening session of Thursday's conference that everyone attending the meeting appears to understand the critical nature of finding a quick solution to the Sudan conflict. The conflict in Sudan has left more than 4,000 people dead and pushed close to 600,000 Sudanese refugees into Egypt, South Sudan, Chad, Libya, the Central African Republic and Ethiopia.

Since Tuesday, Russian media houses have wasted no time in criticizing Turkiye and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s leadership, even questioning the reliability of Ankara’s friendship. He claimed that Turkiye sees Russia as a powerful ally and expressed regret that Moscow had supported Erdogan’s re-election. Erdogan expects to have a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in August to discuss these issues. There is an asymmetric relationship between Turkiye and Russia that has greatly benefited the Turkish side since the start of the war. To what extent Turkiye will be able to balance its relationship with Biden and Putin is still unclear.

CAIRO (AP) — Leaders from Sudan’s seven neighboring countries agreed on Thursday in Cairo to a new Egyptian-led initiative seeking to resolve the deepening conflict in the African country. On Monday, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development — an eight-member East African bloc that's also part of the African Union — held talks between Sudan's rival forces. In closing remarks at the end of the summit, el-Sissi said further talks among the seven nations would be held in Chad. The 12 weeks of fighting between the army and the RSF have turned Khartoum, Sudan's capital, into an urban battlefield. ___This story has been corrected to show that Ethiopia’s prime minister attended the summit, not the president; and that leaders from Sudan’s seven neighboring countries met in Cairo, not six countries.

CAIRO — (AP) — Leaders from Sudan’s six neighboring countries met in Cairo on Thursday for the most high-profile peace talks since conflict erupted across the northeastern African country in mid-April. The meeting, hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, was attended by the leaders of Ethiopia, South Sudan, Chad, Eritrea, the Central African Republic and Libya. The conflict has killed more than 3,000 people and wounded more than 6,000 others, Health Minister Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim said last month. Around 738,000 others have crossed into neighboring countries, the agency said. Thursday’s meeting in Cairo comes weeks after talks in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah broke down after both sides repeatedly failed to stop fighting and violated cease-fire agreements.
