The Ethiopian government has lifted internet restrictions on major social media platforms after months of blocking access. The Media Council of Ethiopia had also called for the restrictions to be lifted. During the shutdown, Ethiopians resorted to using VPNs to access the internet and social media. The state-owned ethio telecom, which will announce its annual report tomorrow, had previously said the closure was beyond its control. The CEO of ethio Telecom, Frehiwot Tamiru, told Parliament in June that the social media curbs create “disappointing experiences” for customers and that the company would work to resolve the issue, though acknowledged the decision was beyond its control.

Kenyan authorities seized a smuggled shipment of medication which can be used by athletes as performance-enhancing drugs, the country's national anti-doping body said on Monday. A woman was arrested on suspicion of smuggling and will appear in court this week, the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya said. It said the illegal consignment contained 150 boxes of triamcinolone acetonide and other "doping" materials, including more than 500 boxes of other medications. However, it also has a serious doping problem and is classed as a high-risk country by track and field's international anti-doping body. Triamcinolone acetonide is among the most commonly used substances for Kenyan athletes who fail doping tests.

Eight people including seven members of one family were killed in Cairo on Monday when a residential building in Egypt's capital collapsed, the public prosecution and state media said. A statement from the public prosecution said the building in the city's Hadayek al-Qubba district "completely collapsed", killing eight people. The prosecution ordered the arrest of the building's owner, the contractor in charge of the works and one of his employees for questioning. Government newspaper Al-Ahram, quoting a resident of the area, reported that seven members of one family had been killed. Egypt has seen a number of deadly building collapses in recent years, both because of the poor state of some and also because of non-compliance with building and town-planning regulations.

Atrocities that amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity include intentional starvation, widespread extrajudicial killings, sexual slavery, rape, torture and mass arbitrary detentions. The joint investigation, while rightly establishing the commission of war crimes by all parties, was an inadequate exercise that did not meet international standards. Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fighters also committed war crimes. During a recent Q&A session on social media, the army’s General Bacha Debele presented peace and accountability as mutually exclusive. Tigrayans continue to be subjected to human rights violations while conflict simmers in Amhara and Oromia, with the potential to engulf the country in violence.

Unidentified gunmen have carried out a deadly attack, resulting in the loss of nine lives, including that of a recently married couple in the city of Bamenda in Cameroon. Authorities are attributing the attack to separatist rebels, who struck at a busy junction. A day before these latest shootings, troops attacked a residence in the same neighbourhood of Nacho, killing five young men. Amnesty International recently published a report detailing alleged murders and rapes by both sides in the Anglophone armed conflict and urging the government to investigate. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the killings, some separatist Ambazonia leaders in the diaspora have been urging their fighters to go after those they brand as "black legs", without mercy.

Since then, the country has worked its way up through the ranks to become one of the biggest crude oil producers in Africa. The country’s crude yields peaked in 2008 at slightly less than 2 million barrels per day (bpd) and now stand at around 1.10-1.15 million bpd. The government has said it wants to push production levels up to 1.3 million bpd, but it will not necessarily have an easy time doing so. But they do offer two examples of the work that the country has been doing to counter the long-term decline in oil production levels. But the point is not just to increase crude production and keep an existing industry afloat.
