BUDAPEST, (Reuters) – Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia won a dramatic women’s 10,000 metres at the world championships last night after race leader Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands stumbled and fell about 20 metres from the finish line. Tsegay, the reigning world 5,000 metres champion, pulled up tightly beside Hassan down the home stretch and the two ran shoulder-to-shoulder before the Dutchwoman’s crash, leaving Tsegay to cross alone in a time of 31 minutes 27.18 seconds to lead an Ethiopian medal sweep. The 26-year-old Tsegay ran 59.01 seconds in the last lap that saw Hassan blaze by six runners down the back stretch and into the lead – until disaster struck. “It was good race with an amazing finish; 10,000 is not my usual event,” Tsegay said. But 10,000 is not an event where I have a lot of experience.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen pledged 19 F-16s to Ukraine and said she hoped the first six could be handed over around New Year. Zelensky called the Dutch and Danish donations a “huge push for other countries who were in doubt” about providing Ukraine with F-16s. Zelensky declined to say how many Ukrainian pilots would undergo training in Denmark and later in Romania, citing security reasons. Russian air defenses also jammed a drone flying toward Moscow early Sunday, causing it to crash. Ukrainian authorities, who generally avoid commenting on attacks on Russian soil, didn’t say whether Ukraine had any involvement.

BUDAPEST — It could have been the best night in Dutch history at the world track and field championships. Hassan and Femke Bol, the Netherlands’ two biggest track stars, fell to the track while leading the two finals on the first night of worlds. Hassan said the fall was not the result of any tiredness from running a 1500m first-round heat about six and a half hours earlier. Bol got up to cross in third place, but without the baton, so the Dutch were given a DNF. On July 23, Bol ran the third-fastest 400m hurdles in history to enter worlds as a prohibitive favorite in that event.
