The number of items allegedly taken from the British Museum’s collection by the senior curator Peter Higgs is thought to total more than 1,500 separate artefacts, according to an internal investigation conducted by the museum and reportedly seen by The Daily Telegraph. The total number of artefacts allegedly taken by Higgs is thought to be “closer to 2,000”, a source told The Daily Telegraph. The sheer number of artefacts taken from the museum’s collection will heap further pressure on a beleaguered senior leadership team, including Hartwig Fischer, the museum’s outgoing director. Higgs was quoted in a Sunday Times investigation into the British Museum in 2002, during which a reporter for the paper gained an apprenticeship at the museum in order to expose the lax security under which the collection is held. Time and again, its leadership has defended its collection against such restitution claims by arguing that the museum is capable of conserving and protecting artefacts uniquely well.

But Ethiopians have not forgotten this war or the war that followed. Nor have Ethiopians forgotten targeted ethnic atrocities of Amhara in Mai Kadra, in Wollega, Oromia, Benishangul Gumuz, Addis Ababa and the so called new Sheger City. At the same time, it is good to know that hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Jews in Israel have responded to the call and are fighting on the side of the Amhara cause. Non-Amhara Ethiopains have an obligation to side with the Amhara cause too. The tweeter link below in English encapsulates why Ethiopians of Jewish origin who reside in Israel have joined the struggle on the ground.

ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia said on Tuesday it would launch a joint investigation with Saudi Arabia into a Human Rights Watch report accusing the kingdom’s border guards of killing hundreds of Ethiopian migrants. The report points to a surge in abuses along the perilous migrant route from the Horn of Africa to oil-rich Saudi Arabia, where hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians live and work. One 20-year-old woman from Ethiopia’s Oromia region, interviewed by the US-based rights monitor, said Saudi border guards opened fire on a group of migrants they had just released from custody. The Saudi government source rejected the HRW accusations. “The allegations included in the Human Rights Watch report about Saudi border guards shooting Ethiopians while they were crossing the Saudi-Yemeni border are unfounded and not based on reliable sources,” said the source, who requested anonymity.

Ethiopia will work with Saudi Arabian authorities to investigate allegations made by a human rights group that hundreds of Ethiopian migrants have been killed by the kingdom's border guards, its foreign ministry said on Tuesday. A Saudi official said on Monday that the allegations made in the report published by Human Rights Watch (HRW) were "unfounded". "The Government of Ethiopia will promptly investigate the incident in tandem with Saudi Authorities," the foreign ministry statement said, emphasizing the strong relations between the two governments. "We welcome the announcement by the government of Ethiopia specifically to investigate the whole issue together with the authorities in Saudi Arabia," Commission spokesman Peter Stano told a daily press conference. U.N. officials in 2022 alleged that Saudi border guards were systematically killing migrants last year; an accusation that Saudi authorities strongly denied.

About 500 children have died from hunger in Sudan — including two dozen babies in a government-run orphanage in the capital of Khartoum — since fighting erupted in the East African country in April, a leading aid group said Tuesday. Save the Children also said that at least 31,000 children lack access to treatment for malnutrition and related illnesses since the charity was forced to close 57 of its nutrition centers in Sudan. "Never did we think we would see children dying from hunger in such numbers, but this is now the reality in Sudan," said Arif Noor, Save the Children's director for Sudan. Speaking from Sudan's White Nile state, Balde praised neighboring Chad, Egypt, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Central African Republic for opening their borders to those fleeing the fighting. In the eastern Qadarif province, at least 132 children died from malnutrition in the government-run Children's Hospital between April and July.

Ethiopian Airlines has announced it will increase its passenger flights to Seoul in South Korea to six per week, from October. Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, said: “Ethiopian is the only African carrier connecting Seoul to the continent and beyond, and the additional frequencies will be significant in fostering economic, cultural, and social interactions providing more diverse and convenient connectivity options to travellers. “As a pan-African carrier, it gives us pleasure to give additional flight options between Addis Ababa, the diplomatic capital of Africa, and Seoul, the rising hub of East Asia. Seoul was the 73rd destination of Ethiopian Airlines ten years ago, and the airline has since nearly doubled its entry points with over 130 destinations serviced across five continents. Ethiopia will launch a joint investigation with Saudi Arabia into allegations made by a human rights group that hundreds of migrants from their country were killed by Saudi border guards, said the Ethiopian foreign ministry, on Tuesday (August 22). This comes a day after a report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused the Saudi border guards of mass killings of migrants along the Yemeni border. “We welcome the announcement by the government of Ethiopia, specifically, to investigate the whole issue together with the authorities in Saudi Arabia,” said Commission spokesman Peter Stano. The United States called on its long-time ally Saudi Arabia for “a thorough and transparent investigation” into the accusations. Similarly, the French foreign ministry also urged a transparent probe and said it would raise the issue of human rights in Yemen and Saudi Arabia with the Saudi authorities.

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia plans to organise a referendum to determine the status of territory disputed by the country's Tigray and Amhara regions, the defence minister said on Tuesday. Most of those who fled the disputed area identify as Tigrayan, while the territory is currently governed by Amhara forces and administrators. The federal constitution, which was drafted by a former Tigrayan-led federal administration in 1995, recognises the lands as belonging to Tigray. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the Tigray war, which ended with a peace deal between the government and Tigrayan leaders last November. Amhara nationalists complained they were not included in the negotiations and felt betrayed by the deal's stipulation that the status of the disputed lands be resolved in accordance with the 1995 constitution.

A Saudi official said on Monday that the allegations in the HRW report were "unfounded". "We welcome the announcement by the government of Ethiopia specifically to investigate the whole issue together with the authorities in Saudi Arabia," spokesman Peter Stano told reporters. In March of that year, the repatriation of Ethiopians from Saudi Arabia began under an agreement between the two countries.

The Ethiopian government said Tuesday it will investigate a report by a human rights group of killings of hundreds its nationals at the Yemen-Saudi border. The New York-based group Human Rights Watch released a report on Monday citing eyewitness accounts of attacks by border guards in Saudi Arabia using machine guns and mortars on unarmed Ethiopians trying to cross into the kingdom from Yemen. The United Nations has already questioned Saudi Arabia about its troops opening fire on migrants in an escalating pattern of attacks along its southern border with war-torn Yemen. About 750,000 Ethiopians live in Saudi Arabia, with as many as 450,000 likely having entered without authorization, according to 2022 statistics from the International Organization for Migration. Saudi Arabia, struggling with youth unemployment, has been sending thousands back to Ethiopia in concert with the Ethiopian government.
