Ethiopia's admission to the Brics, a bloc of emerging countries that until now has included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is a "high point" for Africa's second most populous country, rejoiced its Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Thursday. Saudi Arabia has denied allegations raised in a report by Human Rights Watch that border forces shot hundreds of Ethiopians while they attempted to cross the Saudi-Yemeni border. "These allegations are unfounded and are based on untrusted sources," a Saudi official said in a statement from the official Saudi Press Agency on Thursday. The official condemned the allegations against Saudi Arabia as politicised and misleading. "The kingdom is committed to the principles of human rights stipulated in its regulations, international human rights law and international humanitarian law," the official said. The US State Department said on Thursday that the allegations by Human Rights Watch are "concerning".

The five BRICS developing nations will admit Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates, they said on Thursday, a move aimed at growing the clout of the bloc as it pushes to rebalance the prevailing world order. BRICS – whose acronym was originally coined by an economist at Goldman Sachs, currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. During the demonstration, a protester stabbed a police officer on Menachem Begin Road. The officer was taken in moderate condition for treatment at Ichilov Hospital. One officer's finger was broken by a rock that hit him, and an additional officer was hit in the head by a projectile. In the accident, which occurred on Saturday, May 6, during the afternoon hours, the vehicle hit Refael as he crossed Ben Gurion Boulevard in Netanya together with his grandfather. The driver of the vehicle, who is suspected of escaping the scene, was arrested the day after the accident and taken for questioning.

Pilgrims doing the tawaf on Tuesday were caught in storms as lightning hit an iconic tower in Mecca. Saudi Arabia’s Mecca, home to Islam’s holiest sites, has seen extreme storms and rain that affected pilgrims, shuttered schools and caused chaotic scenes. Videos online on Tuesday showed pilgrims who were doing the tawaf – circling the Kaaba – getting soaked and slipping on the floor as heavy rains thrashed and carried objects around. Mecca resident Mohammed, who like other residents asked to remain anonymous, told AFP that scenes around the Grand Mosque were very scary. Another resident, Yusuf, said August usually brought strong winds to Mecca but that Tuesday’s storm was “the worst” he could remember.

Small-scale avocado farmers in Lommee District, located in the East Shewa Zone of Oromia State, Ethiopia, are making preparations to export 857 quintals of avocado products to Spain. During the current season, the farmers are projected to harvest 1,159 quintals (115.9 metric tons) of avocados. The farmers are collaborating with exporters to facilitate the export process, while the district agriculture office is also assisting in creating favorable conditions for the farmers to directly export their products. These farmers have been engaged in avocado cultivation for the past six years and have been supplying their products to both local and international markets. To support the farmers, the Oromia State Agriculture Bureau is actively involved in raising awareness, establishing plant nursery stations, and providing additional assistance.

The AU said on Tuesday that it had noted ECOWAS’s plan of action regarding Niger and would ‘evaluate its repercussions’. The African Union has suspended Niger from the continental bloc with immediate effect, the latest of a number of sanctions on the West African country since last month’s coup. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also imposed sanctions and last week, agreed on a “D-day” to begin a military intervention through an already activated regional strike force. On Monday, it rejected a proposal by Niger’s military government to hold elections within three years. “We are studying the ECOWAS decision to prepare forces for deployment in Niger, and the African Commission will evaluate its repercussions,” the statement said.
