Nairobi — Cut rose flowers from Kenya and Ethiopia face more scrutiny in order to access the European Union (EU) market. According to the Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya (FPEAK), local flowers will undergo an increased check of up to 25 percent in the EU starting this May. The new measures follow the review of EU regulatory measures that sought to take precautionary measures over the False Codling Moth (FCM). The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ran a publication in October last year on the risk posed by imports of rose-cut flowers, where Kenya and Ethiopia are the biggest exporters. FPEAK says that the move is part of the annual review process under Commission Implementing Regulation 2022/2389 that lays out the rules for the uniform application of frequency rates for plant health checks.

Creeping war threatens Sudan's eastern borderDUBAISudan's nine-month-old war has so far largely spared the country's east. Sudan's war has already killed thousands, including between 10,000 and 15,000 in a single city in the western Darfur region, according to U.N. experts. The war pits Sudan's army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan against his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, known as Hemeti, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). "In the short term, Asmara is likely to work to increase its own influence among eastern Sudan's communities," Rift Valley said. One witness reported being "offered a small sum to join" a 300-person camp by the Eastern Sudan Front for Justice, which is led by al-Amin Daoud.

At least 372 people have died in two northern Ethiopian regions from drought-induced hunger in the last six months, a senior government official said on Wednesday, adding to the regions' challenges arising from conflict. Endale said the findings were from a 10-day assessment in the two regions, and it was possible there were more deaths. Legesse Tulu, government spokesperson, Mengasha Fentaw, spokesperson of Amhara region and Redaei Halefom, spokesperson of Tigray, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the deaths. In late December, Getachew Reda, the president of Tigray region's interim administration, said 91% of the region's population was at risk of starvation and death and the situation was beyond the administration's capacity to handle. Last May, the WFP suspended food aid to Tigray following reports of widespread theft of donations.

In December, rules went into effect that require early childhood educators to meet certain education requirements. The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) oversees the District’s early childhood sector and we congratulate it for its rigorous education requirements and supporting early childhood educators to meet them. ADVERTISEMENTCandidates for the CDA must successfully pass the national CDA exam that tests their knowledge of early childhood best practices based on the National CDA Competency Standards. The Early Childhood Educator Pay Equity Fund, a first-in-the-nation initiative administered by OSSE, is increasing compensation for early childhood educators based on the position where they work and the credentials they hold. In Washington, we have many things to honor during Black History Month, including our exceptional early childhood educators and those who’ve helped create a system that allows them to build thriving careers and lives.
