Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was harshly criticized by conservatives on social media Sunday after a video was shared showing her speaking about her support for Somalia, the nation from which she hails. The translation includes Omar stating she's in Congress to represent Somali Americans' interests and that the "U.S. will do what we want and nothing else." Responding to an "Israel War Room" page post of the video, former Republican Virginia Rep. Denver Riggleman wrote, "Ilhan Omar is a disgraceful representative." Omar responded to the controversy by replying to a comment on the clip, in which a researcher wrote, "This interpretation is slanted. She says at the end that all the five territories will be liberated, but it appears rhetorical..""It’s not only slanted but completely off, but I wouldn’t expect more from these propagandists," Omar wrote in response.

Ethiopian Ambassador to Somalia, Muktar Mohamed Ware, issued an apology on Sunday following reports of his possible dismissal over remarks he made regarding the country in an interview with Ethiopian local media. Ethiopia signed a Memorandum understanding (MoU) on January 2, 2024 with the government of Somaliland which will grant Ethiopia access to the Gulf of Aden in exchange for Ethiopia’s recognition of Somaliland’s independence from Somalia. The agreement rests on a wide-scope of cooperation including social, economic, political and military fields, and has fueled tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia. The country recalled its ambassador to Ethiopia for consultation as it deemed the move to be a violation of Somalia’s territorial integrity and further declared the agreement to be void. Somaliland declared itself as an independent republic in 1991 following the still ongoing civil war in the south of Somalia, which broke out in the 1980s.

One recent study published in BMC Psychiatry claims that the global rate of post-abortion depression stands at 34.5%, affecting more than one in three women. This systematic review and meta-analysis, reportedly the first of its kind focusing globally on post-abortion depression, was conducted by Ethiopian researchers. The researchers had to approach their study with regional, rather than country-specific insights due to the limited availability of literature from certain areas. The study findings indicate that depression is significantly more common post-abortion in lower and middle-income countries (42.91%) compared to high-income countries (24.9%). It also found variations across regions, with the Eastern Mediterranean region having the highest prevalence rate of post-abortion depression, followed by Asia, Africa, and Australia.

The war also involved Sudan, Eritrea, and Egypt, who had their interests and disputes with Ethiopia. I say subdivided because a third of Ethiopia is already Somaliland, which was given away by colonial Britain to imperial Ethiopia. Eritrea fought a long and bloody war of independence from 1961 to 1991 against Ethiopia, to which it was annexed. This support was aimed at promoting self-determination for Eritrea, which Eritrea gallantly attained after decades of struggling against insurmountable odds. Somalia was divided into British Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, and French Somaliland (Djibouti), while Egypt was also under British influence.

Google MapBy Fessehaye KidaneEritrea, AsmaraOn January 1, 2024, Ethiopia’s government opened a new Pandora Box in the Horn of Africa. Soon after it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Somaliland so as to get maritime access, all of a sudden the decision and treaties backfired against its expectations. In return, the Somaliland government expects to get political recognition from Ethiopia in spite of Ethiopia is mum so far on the issue of recognition. Nonetheless, whether the Ethio-Somaliland maritime accord would be a ‘blessing or a curse’ to Ethiopians in general is something which begs a question of the wisdom and political insight of Ethiopian political leaders!
