French journalist Antoine Galindo, who was detained for a week in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, was released Thursday ahead of his scheduled second appearance in court Friday, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said. Angela Quintal, head of CPJ’s Africa program, told VOA that Galindo, a reporter for Paris-based news site Africa Intelligence, left for France immediately after his release. “Unfortunately, the local politician whom he was interviewing when he was arrested remained in jail and appeared in court today,” Quintal said. Quintal said, “You can’t have one standard for a foreign journalist and another for a local. The publication added he had a journalist visa and the proper accreditation from the government’s Media Authority.

Could finding fulfillment come from fully embracing each present moment, rather than relentless pursuit of some distant dream? An exclusive emphasis on amassing assets for an uncertain future often comes at the cost of time with loved ones. It represents an affordable way to enjoy hard-earned money in the present rather than defer gratification to an uncertain future. I cannot fault those who prioritize today’s fulfillment when tomorrow feels so uncertain. But perpetual focus on the present alone discounts tomorrow’s unknowns, which can just as easily hold surprises worth preparing for.

An Ethiopian shield that was looted by British soldiers in 1868 has been withdrawn from sale in Newcastle upon Tyne after a restitution request was filed last week by Ethiopian authorities. The hide and metalwork shield, which bears the inscription ‘Magdala 13th April 1868’, was due to be sold on 29 February through the auction house Anderson & Garland. The AIC acquired the work in question, Russian War Prisoner, in 1966. The clause also specified that ‘reputational risk can be generated not just by the organisation and its decisions, but also by staff and other individuals associated with the organisation acting in a personal capacity’.

Ethiopian Airlines on Friday evening denied media reports claiming that it would reroute flights to avoid Somali airspace, which had previously been utilized for flights en route to Asia. The company arrived at this decision due to the lack of “reliable air traffic services” from Somali air traffic controllers, citing Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew. However, the airlines stated on Twitter that the report about the CEO’s comments on the Somali airspace situation is inaccurate and distorted. “Ethiopian Airlines has not stopped flying over the Somali airspace and Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO did not state that it is unsafe to fly over Somali airspace. Data from the FlightRadar24 flight tracking website indicates that the airline’s flights on Friday evening did utilize Djibouti’s airspace, even though the airline has continued to use Somalia’s airspace for cargo flights.

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Ethiopian government forces battled militiamen on Friday in the capital of the Amhara region, Bahir Dar, the regional administration and residents said, in the first fighting there since the early days of the conflict last year. Government officials have said on several occasions in recent months that the violence in Amhara, the country's second-largest region, is under control. "These extremist groups could not resist the combined strength of the security forces, leaving behind their dead and wounded and abandoning their weapons," it said. A Bahir Dar resident, who asked not to be named for security reasons, said he heard heavy weapons fire from early in the morning. A resident of the town of Merawi, 36 km (22 miles) from Bahir Dar, said there had been fighting there too on Friday but it had also died down.
