ADDIS ABABA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopian Airlines has inked a deal with Boeing Company to purchase eight 777-9 wide-body jets, with potential order for up to 12 additional aircraft, the airlines said Tuesday in a statement. Ethiopian Airlines' selection of 777-9 jets makes the country's national carrier the first customer of this plane type in Africa. The statement noted that Boeing airplanes make up more than half of Ethiopian Airlines' current fleet. "Ethiopian Airlines marks yet another first in our longstanding partnership by selecting the 777-9 to be the flagship of its growing fleet," the statement quoted Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president, as saying. As part of its Vision 2035, Ethiopian Airlines is planning to fly to more than 209 international destinations, with more than 271 modern and eco-friendly airplanes.

ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopian Airlines agreed to buy as many as 20 of Boeing Co’s massive 777X aircraft, providing the coming jet with an important endorsement from one of Africa’s premier airlines. Mesfin Tasew, chief executive officer of Ethiopian Airlines Group, unveiled the latest deal Tuesday in Addis Ababa. More than half the aircraft in its current fleet are Boeing models, including 15 737 Max jets. Last year, the carrier announced it was ordering 11 of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliners and 20 of its 737 Max airplanes as part of a fleet overhaul. That long-standing relationship was strained after one of the workhorse 737 Max models crashed minutes after takeoff in 2019, after pilots battled a feature later linked to a faulty Boeing design.

Qatar Airways has completed repairs to its Airbus A350 jets that had paint cracks on the surface of the fuselage and parts of the wings, the airline told Reuters. As a result, all 58 widebodies in the fleet are in flying condition. The flight status comes more than a year after Qatar and Airbus ended a dispute in a UK court in which the carrier asked for billion-dollar compensation for the problems presented by the aircraft. A US court on Tuesday absolved five major technology companies accused of aiding the use of child labour in cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the case filed by former child miners and their representatives, Google parent company Alphabet, Apple, Dell Technologies, Microsoft and Tesla stood accused of facilitating child labour in their supply chains for cobalt. The plaintiffs said that the companies were aware of the use of child labour in cobalt mines but did not act for fear of disrupting the supply of the metal. A lot of the metal is extracted by artisanal miners who employ child labour and where safety is not observed. More than 40 000 children are working in hazardous conditions in cobalt mines in the Katanga province alone, according to the UN.

Azul Linhas Aéreas is preparing an offer to take over rival Gol, which has been in bankruptcy since January. Among the options would be taking over 100% of the struggling carrier, but Azul is also considering not taking the project forward. Many of them expire in the short term, forcing the airline to seek renegotiation to avoid having to return them. Even so, some lessors such as AerCap may demand the return of planes from March 25th, when the deadline for Gol to seek renegotiation of contracts expires. Gol and Azul shares rose on Monday, March 4, after the publication of the reports.
