Specifically, Louise focused significantly more on Loretta and Erin than on the faces of total strangers. “Long-lasting social memory likely provided key foundations for the evolution of human culture and sociality as they extended across time, space and group boundaries,” the researchers wrote. “Most people who work closely with great apes have the impression they must clearly remember us, even over years of separation,” Krupenye said. The apes had last seen old companions at least nine months ago, and, in the most extreme case, bonobo Louise hadn’t seen Loretta or Erin in nearly 27 years at the time of testing. The chimps and bonobos at the Kumamoto Sanctuary, more “research-experienced” apes, showed the most robust biases toward former groupmates, the researchers said.

(CBC/Radio-Canada - image credit)The tent city near Gatineau's Gîte ami homeless shelter is a constant source of fear for François Lescalier. "It's not a very safe zone, especially at winter time," Lescalier said of the existing tent city. "We're afraid some of them could be frozen, so we are very happy there's a new solution that is going to start today with heated tents for 50 people." He acknowledges putting people in tents, even heated ones, is not a humane or lasting solution to the city's homelessness problem. Still, it's better than letting the tent city take root, with all its dangers.

No, not Premier David Eby — we’re talking about his federal doppelganger, Housing Minister Sean Fraser. Fraser has been on a run of reforms since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed him to the housing portfolio in July. In British Columbia, though, the federal minister’s breakneck housing pace has earned a few chuckles from the New Democrat administration. It may end up being the most ambitious public-sector housing construction plan in provincial history. Eby has been urging the feds to get back into the game of building federal housing, like they did decades ago.

A three-year-old puppet and her nana, popular among Canadian youth two decades ago, are taking over TikTok, and perhaps proving once again that Mona is a wonderful girl. With over 200 million views on the hashtag Nanalan on TikTok, odds are those scrolling through the app have either heard “Who’s that wonderful girl?,” or seen Mona and her nana together in a video. Toronto’s Jason Hopley and Jamie Shannon co-created “Nanalan’” when they were working at YTV originally to fill commercial spots as three-minute shorts. “You’re always free at your Nana’s place to do things, and because nanas are way more relaxed than your parents are, right … nanas are just awesome.”WHO'S THAT WONDERFUL GIRL, ANYWAY? “At the time, it was 1999, there wasn’t too many things starring a grandmother or a little girl,” Shannon said.

Pauline Peng Skinner, who runs a small wholesale business in Richmond Hill, Ont., says her bank told her in early December that she isn't eligible for the CEBA loan she received. But earlier this month, she said, she was told by her bank HSBC that she wasn't eligible for the money she received more than three years ago. Peng Skinner said she's now being told she's expected to repay the loan in full by Dec. 31. "The flexibility that we are providing is significant support for small businesses who might still be struggling to make ends meet," the spokesperson said in an email. But Peng Skinner said the way she was told at the last moment to pay back the money isn't fair.

(Terry Roberts/CBC - image credit)An independent assessment of the Holyrood thermal generating station has determined the oil-fired power plant can continue to operate for another decade as a backup to Muskrat Falls. Two of the three turbines at the aging Holyrood generating facility are now out of service and the only unit currently online not operating at full capacity. Hydro is stressing that there are "sufficient available generating reserves at this time and there are no current alerts." As CBC/Radio-Canada reported last week, Unit 2 at the 490-megawatt Holyrood thermal generating station is offline for repairs until March.

Winners and losersTo make this math relatively simple, the spreadsheet compared one-year periods when the California price index fell vs. when it was rising. Conversely, California prices rose three-quarters of the time. By the way, California prices rose 1.3% in the year ended in 2023’s third quarter, according to the FHFA index. So, the national Consumer Price Index grew at a 3.1% annual pace when California home prices dipped vs. 3.9% in price upswings. Ponder what my spreadsheet found when it ranked California unemployment by quarter, then divided the past 48 years into thirds.
