Business News of Thursday, 6 October 2016Source: Business in CameroonGov't back to initial option of building deep water port in NgemeCameroonian State back to initial option of building deep water port of Limbé in NgemeAfter announcing in August 2013 the relocation of the project for the construction of the deep water port of Limbé, from the Ngeme site to Isonge, the State of Cameroon has come back to the initial option, “after assessing several hypotheses”, reveals a report just made public by the National Port Authority (APN). At the time, the then-Minister of Economy, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, had justified the relocation of this project by the narrowness of the Ngeme site, and above all, the costs linked to the payment of compensations. All these particularities of the Isonge site, whih were then presented as advantages for the implementation of the project, are finally brushed aside since, according to APN’s revelations, it is finally in Ngeme that the deep water port of Limbé will be built. As a reminder, it was on 1 November 2013 that the Cameroonian government signed an agreement with the Cameroonian-Korean consortium called Limbe Port Industrial Development Corporation (LIPID), for the construction of the deep water port of Limbé, in the South-West region of the country. This infrastructure, which should cost no less than FCfa 300 billion, according to updated estimates, should be delivered in 2018.

Business News of Thursday, 6 October 2016Source: Business in Cameroon600 MW of electricity to harness in the Dja basin by 2020600 MW of electricity to harness in the Dja basin by 2020The company Hydrochina just presented Hydro Mékin, a public Cameroonian company, a support programme for the establishment and operation, by 2020, of energy infrastructure with a global production capacity of 600 MW, we learned from reliable sources. In practical terms, this is about two hydroelectric setups to be carried out on the Dja (460 MW) and Boumba (140 MW) rivers, both located in the Dja basin, the Cameroonian side of the large Congo basin, and whose hydroelectric potential is officially estimated at approximately 3,000 MW. Developing of this potential is one of the main missions given by the Cameroonian government to the company Hydro Mékin. It is in this view that this company is spearheading the project for the construction of the Mékin dam (15 MW), under completion in the Southern region of Cameroon. Built by China National Electric Engineering Corporation (CNEEC) with Chinese funding (approximately FCfa 25 billion), this energy infrastructure is essentially destined to supply the eight boroughs of the Dja and Lobo department in electricity.
