Sports World News of Sunday, 2 October 2016Source: BBCAllen punishes wasteful Manchester UnitedWayne RooneyStoke snatched a point at Manchester United as Joe Allen capitalised on a spill from David de Gea to punish the hosts' lax first-half finishing. After a string of saves from Lee Grant before the break, United made the breakthrough when substitute Anthony Martial swept home a curling shot. But when De Gea failed to hold Glen Johnson's shot and Jon Walters' follow-up came off the bar, Allen poked in. Paul Pogba rattled the bar with a header as United mounted a late siege on the Stoke goal, but Mark Hughes' side clung on to the point that takes them off the bottom of the table. Stoke have still won just once this season, but this result far outshines August's 4-0 EFL Cup win at Stevenage.

Sports World News of Sunday, 2 October 2016Source: goal.comBalotelli sees red after sending Nice top of Ligue 1Mario BalotelliMario Balotelli had a bittersweet afternoon at the Allianz Riviera, where he scored a stunning winning goal to put Nice top of Ligue 1 but was later dismissed in the 2-1 win over Lorient. The Italy international, who was overlooked for a recall to the Azzurri this weekend despite his excellent form in France, shot brilliantly into the top corner with a curling shot from the edge of the box with four minutes to restore his side’s advantage after Benjamin Moukandjo cancelled out Ricardo Pereira’s opener. Balotelli, however, was booked for his celebration as he removed his shirt following what proved the game’s decisive moment. Two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game, he was then shown a second yellow after a seemingly innocuous clash with a defender on the left touchline. The striker, who has five goals in Ligue 1 already since signing from Liverpool on a free transfer on August 31, therefore faces a suspension when Lucien Favre’s side tackle Nice after the international break.

Sports World News of Monday, 3 October 2016Source: goal.comDon't take the England job, Arsene - Ian WrightArsenal manager Arsene WengerArsenal legend Ian Wright has pleaded with long-serving manager Arsene Wenger to ignore reported overtures from England due to how much pressure he would be under. Wenger achieved a landmark 20 years in the Arsenal job this weekend and marked the anniversary with a dramatic, late 1-0 victory at Burnley on Sunday. Sam Allardyce's acrimonious departure from the Three Lions job this week has triggered widespread rumours that Wenger, who called England a “paradise for football” this week, could be approached for the vacancy. "[I'd tell Arsene] don't do the England job, because it's too much pressure," Wright, who is now a television pundit, told BBC Sport on Sunday. "And then go to England and it not quite work out and you get that kind of stick as well… That's a selfish reason, personally."

It was 2-0 before the break when impressive duo Dele Alli and Son Heung-min combined brilliantly for the former to leave City facing an uphill task with a calm finish. However, Spurs' fluent attacking play was causing problems for the City defence with Son a particular threat. Kolarov - under no pressure - inexplicably miskicked his clearance from Danny Rose's deep left-wing cross past a helpless Claudio Bravo. Spurs continued in the ascendancy and Son tested Bravo with a near-post drive, before Christian Eriksen flashed a 20-yard free-kick past the left-hand post. Alli got a lucky break when his pass deflected off Pablo Zabaleta into Son's path and the England midfielder continued his run to take Son's throughball before coolly slotting past Bravo.

Sports World News of Sunday, 2 October 2016Source: goal.comAubameyang outshined by Chicharito in Bundesliga boutThe Gabon international failed to find the net to add to his five goals already scored this seasonPierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to inspire Borussia Dortmund as they suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon. Both Chicharito and Aubameyang have scored seven goals in their last ten matches in all competitions, for their respective clubs. With Robert Lewandowski also failing to find the net earlier on the day in Bayern’s 1-1 draw against FC Cologne, it leaves Aubameyang, Chicharito and Lewandowski equal on five goals apiece heading into the international recess. Yet on the evidence of Saturday’s showing, it’s the Mexican who will pull away from his rival in the scoring stakes! Lewandowski will also lead Poland in their World Cup qualifier next weekend, while Chicharito’s Mexico will play friendlies against New Zealand and Panama respectively.

Sports World News of Saturday, 1 October 2016Source: goal.comPayet stunner rescues point for HammersWest Ham players celebrate Payet’s goalDimitri Payet's stunning solo goal salvaged a point for struggling West Ham as they ended a run of four consecutive Premier League defeats in a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough at London Stadium. However, Payet stole the show for the Hammers, the France international leaving the Boro defence in a daze with a superb run and clever finish to level the match in the 57th minute. West Ham went closest to breaking the deadlock in a first half that saw few clear-cut chances when Mark Noble rattled the woodwork with a thunderous strike. West Ham grew into the match and Payet became more influential, with the playmaker seeing a close-range shot blocked before hitting a blistering strike wide. West Ham continued to mount the pressure and Victor Valdes had to be alert to stop Cheikhou Kouyate smuggling home from a corner.

Sports World News of Saturday, 1 October 2016Source: goal.comVan Aanholt rescues SunderlandDavid Moyes still searching for his first win as Sunderland ManagerDavid Moyes' search for a first Premier League win in charge of Sunderland continues but Patrick van Aanholt's late goal rescued a welcome 1-1 draw at home to West Brom on Saturday. Sunderland looked destined to suffer a sixth league defeat of the season after Nacer Chadli's first-half effort gave West Brom the lead, but Van Aanholt – a second-half substitute – saved the hosts with seven minutes to go. However, the hosts' persistence paid off late on when Van Aanholt struck to secure Sunderland a morale-boosting second point of the season. Van Aanholt was his replacement. The home side were not to be denied in the 83rd minute, though, as Van Aanholt arrived to meet Watmore's cut-back and scuffed an effort past Foster to rescue a late draw.

Sports World News of Saturday, 1 October 2016Source: BBCMilner penalty sees off SwanseaLiverpool players celebrate goalJames Milner's late penalty gave Liverpool a hard-fought victory over Swansea, increasing the scrutiny on Swans boss Francesco Guidolin. Milner netted the winner six minutes from time after Firmino was fouled. It was, however, a little cruel on Swansea, whose spirited performance has probably bought Guidolin a little more time to turn things around. However, the visitors were vastly improved in the second half as they recaptured their recent impressive form and equalised thanks to more unsteady set-piece defending, as Firmino headed in from close range. Klopp's side dominated from that point and, after they were initially thwarted by dogged Swansea defending, they eventually struck when Angel Rangel pushed Firmino in the back and Milner calmly converted the penalty.
