Dhaka court sentences three to life in prison over 2003 murder
A Dhaka court has sentenced three people to life in prison for the 2003 murder of a man in Dhaka’s Badda over a feud over a loan. Judge Md Iqbal Hossain of the Dhaka Fifth Special Judge’s Court delivered the verdict in the case on Thursday. The convicts were Anowar Hossain Anu from Badda’s Abdullahbag, Md Borhan Uddin aka Jinnatul Alam from Tentulia village in Shariatpur and Abdul Haque aka Abdullah from Sherpur’s Baldia Char. Anu and Borhan were in court for the verdict and were sent to prison afterwards. After police arrested Anu and Borhan, Borhan confessed to the crime under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day tomorrow
DHAKA, May 16, 2024 (BSS) – The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) will be celebrated in the country tomorrow with the theme ‘Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development’. According to the United Nations, the World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on May 17 since 1969, marking the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in March 2006 stipulating that World Information Society Day shall be celebrated every year on May 17 to focus on the importance of ICT and the wide range of issues related to the information society. The government has introduced 4G technology, she said, adding that preparations are underway to launch telecommunication services of 5G technology. I urge everyone to work together to reap the benefits of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and ensure world-class telecommunication and information technology services for the people,” she said.

12-year-old dies after falling from train in Dhaka’s Banani

SC bars Salim Prodhan from contesting Upazila polls
A decision from the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division has barred Salim Prodhan, known for his involvement in the casino scandal, from contesting the Upazila Parishad elections in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj. Afterwards EC lawyer Aziz told the media, “Salim Prodhan will not be allowed to take part in the Rupganj Upazila Parishad elections. On Apr 30, Salim moved the High Court demanding his candidacy be restored and a symbol be allocated to him. The High Court heard the petition, declared his candidacy legal and ordered him to be given an election symbol. On May 2, the Appellate Division’s chamber justice stayed the High Court decision and sent it to the Appellate Bench for its decision.

Orangemen golf season comes to an end at districts
YORK -- The Beatrice boys golf team competed in the B-3 District Tournament on Tuesday and fell short of qualifying any players for state. The young Beatrice squad finished with a team score of 426, which put them in 10th place. "I think the team is a little disappointed with the team score and individual scores," Stuart said. "I talked to the guys afterward about what it takes to get to that next level-- and that's putting the time in between now and next season," Stuart said. Fairbury's team score of 352 was good enough for sixth place at the B-3 District Meet.

Israeli forces kill 3 in West Bank: Palestinian authorities
