Heatwave in 16 Bangladesh districts to continue into Monday
A mild heatwave is sweeping across 16 districts, including Dhaka, after Cyclone Remal and is likely to continue for the next 24 hours, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. “As there is little chance of rain tomorrow, temperatures are likely to remain similar. If rain falls, the temperature will drop.”“Today, the highest temperature recorded in Dhaka was 36.6 degrees Celsius. Some parts of the Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may experience moderate to heavy rainfall, the BMD said. The forecast said the southwest monsoon has advanced to the Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions.

Renewable energy will save 5,000 MW power: Saber
DHAKA, June 1, 2024(BSS) - Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury today said that if the country's agricultural irrigation pumps are converted to renewable energy, it could save 5,000 megawatts of electricity. Aiming to combat climate change and promote sustainable development, the government is committed to increasing the production and use of renewable energy, he said. The minister further said: "We are encouraging the private sector to invest in renewable energy projects. The minister said that renewable energy not only reduces carbon emissions but also creates employment, improves public health, and enhances the quality of life. The damage caused by Cyclone Remal in 20 districts totals more than Tk 68.80 billion, says State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibbur Rahman. Cyclone Remal hit the southwest coast of Bangladesh and India’s West Bengal on the night of May 26. The state minister said that the damage in 20 districts had amounted to Tk 68.80 million, but the government still did not have a full account of the situation. Flood victims in Sunamganj have received Tk 1.5 million in cash, Tk 500,000 for cattle feed and Tk 500,000 worth of food for children. Similarly, the ministry provided Tk 1.5 million in cash, and Tk 300,000 of dry and other food to the Dinajpur district.

The IMD said these two stations had been checked and it did not report any sensor errors. The highest temperature previously recorded in New Delhi was 48.4 C (119.12 F)in May 1998, the draft IMD report said.
