VARANASI, India, June 1, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi said on Saturday he was confident of his return to power after votingended in the country's six-week election, a marathon contest bedevilled bysuccessive punishing heatwaves. Modi himself was certain that he had, saying he was confident that "thepeople of India have voted in record numbers" to re-elect his government. - 'Politics of temples' -Modi presided over the inauguration this year of a grand temple to thedeity Ram, built on the grounds of a centuries-old mosque in Ayodhya razed byHindu zealots in 1992. - 'Stay hydrated' -India voted in seven phases over six weeks to ease the immense logisticalburden of staging an election in the world's most populous country. Turnout is down several percentage points from the last national electionin 2019, with analysts blaming widespread expectations of a Modi victory aswell as successive heatwaves scorching India's northern states.

VARANASI, India, June 1, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - India's six-week election reaches its final day of voting Saturday, including in the holy city Prime Minister Narendra Modi has used as a staging post for his Hindu nationalist agenda. Modi is widely expected to win a third term in office after results are announced Tuesday, in large part due to the cultivation of his image as an aggressive champion of India's majority faith. It is one of the final cities to vote in India's gruelling election and where public support for Modi's ever-closer alignment of religion and politics burns brightest. Analysts have long expected Modi to triumph against the opposition alliance, which at no point has named an agreed candidate for prime minister. Temperatures in Varanasi were expected to peak at 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit) during Saturday's voting.

Modi's alliance to win India election, exit polls project
Most exit polls projected the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could win a two-thirds majority in the 543-member lower house of parliament, where 272 is needed for a simple majority.
