SYDNEY, Jan 12, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Australia's parliament will reopen two weeks early to crack down on hate crimes and gun ownership following the mass shooting at Bondi Beach, the government said Monday. Australia has flagged a suite of reforms to hate crime and gun laws since the December 14 attack on a Jewish festival that killed 15 people -- the country's deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades. "The terrorists at Bondi Beach had hatred in their minds but guns in their hands -- this law will deal with both," Albanese told a news conference. Last week, the government announced a royal commission inquiry into the Bondi Beach shooting. Sajid Akram and his son Naveed allegedly targeted Jews attending a Hannukah celebration at Bondi Beach.

Trump says US will take Greenland 'one way or the other'ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, Jan 12, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - President Donald Trump said Sunday the United States would take Greenland "one way or the other," warning that Russia and China would "take over" if Washington didn't act. Trump says controlling the mineral-rich Danish territory is crucial for US national security given increased Russian and Chinese military activity in the Arctic. "If we don't take Greenland, Russia or China will, and I'm not letting that happen," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, despite neither country laying claim to the vast island. Trump said he would be open to making a deal with the Danish self-governing territory "but one way or the other, we're going to have Greenland." "Greenland should make the deal, because Greenland does not want to see Russia or China take over," Trump warned, as he mocked its defenses.

Many young voters were active participants or close witnesses in the mass mobilization that culminated in regime change in mid-2024. In past polls, many young voters were deterred not by indifference but by fear. Turnout figures alone will not restore trust if young voters suspect that results are predetermined. In such a vote, youth participation could be even more decisive. Unlike previous moments of political transition, today’s young voters are not simply inheriting a system; they have already challenged it.

This has produced widespread uncertainty about the purpose of universities -- and growing skepticism about their relevance. If higher education institutions wish to remain meaningful national institutions, they must break free from outdated routines and redefine their roles in ways that reflect today’s realities. On one side is society’s expectation that higher education will produce graduates who can thrive in complex, unpredictable environments. Far from being a limitation, this dual responsibility represents the defining challenge -- and opportunity -- of contemporary higher education. Only by navigating the tension between the transformational and the transactional can higher education prepare graduates for a world that changes faster than any curriculum can be rewritten.

Starting January 21, 2026, those applying for a US B1/B2 (business/tourist) visa with a Bangladeshi passport who are deemed otherwise eligible during the interview process may be required to pay a visa bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000. It's essential to note that this bond is not a visa surcharge but a condition of travel. The State Department clearly states that the bond does not guarantee visa issuance. Even if the bond is assumed to be refunded, tying up cash for a certain period of time stifles households and businesses. Bonds, which appear like insurance, act thus as a double burden, tying up cash and restricting travel plans.
