JnU student jailed for 5 years for hurting religious sentiment
A Jagannath University student, Tithy Sarkar, was sentenced to five years in prison in a case under the Digital Security Act (DSA) for hurting religious sentiment by making derogatory comments about religion on social media. Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge AM Zulfiqar Hayat delivered the verdict in the case on Monday, according to bdnews24.com. Tithy will be under the probation of the Department of Social Services for one year, confirmed Jewel Mia, the acting bench assistant of the tribunal. If Tithy is believed to have reformed during this probation period, she will not have to serve five years in prison. The court official added that the same tribunal is also taking statements against the JNU student in another case of hurting religious sentiments.

Rice price sharply declining in city market
DHAKA, May 13, 2024 (BSS) - Price of most rice varieties found decliningsharply in the city markets for the last two weeks while lowering of staplefood price likely to be continued till further period. "The rice price is declining with a range of Taka 100-150, per 50-kg sack, onan average.”The price fall situation likely to be continued for one and halfmonth", said the whole seller. Talking about the present rice price situation, noted farm economist DrJahangir Alam said “there is no chance of rice price hike in the next twomonths as the overall yield of Aman and Boro has crossed the optimum level." Dr Alam, however, continued that the rice price likely to be declined more incoming days as the Boro is contributing 54 percent of the total rice output. Total rice production grew 2.5 percent year-on-year to 3.91 crore tonnes, thehighest on record, in FY23.

Speaking as designated discussants, Bangladesh Public Procurement Authority (BPPA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mohammed Shoheler Rahman Chowdhury said they want to bring 100% procurement system in the country into E+-GP system. In the programme, Former Lead Procurement Specialist of the World Bank Dr Zafrul Islam presented keynote paper titled ‘Governance and Competitiveness in Public Procurement Practices: Bangladesh Context’. Zafrul Islam said there are instances of public officials or their family members operate businesses that participate in same procurement process in the organization. He stressed on the need of being competitiveness to sustain in the long run in procurement process.

Putin wants Sergei Shoigu, defence minister since 2012 and a long-standing ally, to become the secretary of Russia's powerful Security Council, replacing incumbent Nikolai Patrushev, and to also have responsibilities for the military-industrial complex, the Kremlin announced on Sunday. The shake-up gives Shoigu a job that is technically regarded as senior to his defence ministry role, ensuring continuity and saving Shoigu's face. The appointment of Belousov, a civilian official known for his economic decision-making rather than battlefield knowledge, is the biggest surprise. "The one who is more open to innovations is the one who will be victorious on the battlefield," Peskov said. The change is also likely to be seen by an attempt by Putin to subject defence spending to greater scrutiny to ensure funds are effectively spent after a Shoigu ally and deputy defence minister was accused by state prosecutors of taking a bribe.

First human to receive transplanted pig kidney dies
"The Mass General transplant team is deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Mr. Rick Slayman," the hospital said in a statement on Saturday. Slayman had received a transplant of a human kidney at the same hospital in 2018 after seven years on dialysis, but the organ failed after five years and he had resumed dialysis treatments. The kidney was provided by eGenesis of Cambridge, Massachusetts, from a pig that had been genetically edited to remove genes harmful to a human recipient and add certain human genes to improve compatibility, according to the hospital. NYU surgeons had previously transplanted pig kidneys into brain-dead people. A University of Maryland team in January 2022 transplanted a genetically modified pig heart into a 57-year-old man with terminal heart disease, but he died two months later.

Reflections on the Cornell Encampment - The Cornell Daily Sun
My Encampment VisitsI have been to the Cornell pro-Palestinian encampment a handful of times, and I have seen nothing that demands dismantling it, especially with end of term approaching. If I may borrow a quote from a Cornell student that appeared in the New York Times: “[A] 27-year-old Ph.D. candidate in cell and molecular biology at Cornell, pointed to the name of the student group she is affiliated with: the Coalition for Mutual Liberation. Most of these students know almost nothing about the history of Israel and Palestine or have a skewed, uninformed view of that history. ConclusionYes, it is troubling that the permit for the Cornell encampment was obtained under false pretenses and that the encampment leaders will not move to a designated area. The Cornell Daily Sun is interested in publishing a broad and diverse set of content from the Cornell and greater Ithaca community.
