This breakthrough follows the commercial launch of Starlink-based satellite internet in July, which added 200Gbps to the network. The government has finalised its agreement to join the revised route of the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable, recently approved by the planning body ECNEC. US tariff cut for Bangladesh stirs debateBangladesh has secured a reduction in US import tariffs on its goods, a move viewed by many, including the interim government, as a “major diplomatic victory”. Bangladesh was hit with a 35 percent tariff on its goods. Writer-researcher Altaf Parvez asked what concessions Bangladesh had offered in return for the tariff cut. “If the NDA concerns long-term conditions like the 25-year India–Bangladesh Friendship Treaty, that would indeed be worrying,” he said. He said the deal could trap Bangladesh in rising foreign debt, import costs, and military dependency.

Bangladeshi trade analysts have raised concerns that the recent tariff relief from the United States may offer only “temporary” breathing space, as broader risks for the country’s export sector continue to mount. He also raised the question of what Bangladesh may have agreed to in exchange for the tariff concession. “Although this waiver offers short-term relief, it raises the issue of what Bangladesh had to give up.
