Reserve Bank governor Adrian Orr. Photo / Mark MitchellOPINION:Reading the Reserve Bank's review of its response to the pandemic took me back to the summer of 2020/21. Housing-related data should be right up there with the indicators the Monetary Policy Committee closely monitors. That said, opinion is divided over what the housing market currently says about the Reserve Bank's fight against inflation. Cost of living burden pushes Govt into fuel sector changesThe Government is tinkering with the fuel industry by giving power to the Commerce Commission to improve the sector’s security and affordability, boosting the country’s fuel supply resilience and delaying plans that reduce emissions amid a cost of living crisis. The first of the changes concerned minimum onshore fuel stocks and Government-procured diesel storage. Fuel importers and wholesalers with bulk storage facilities would be required to hold minimum levels of onshore stocks of petrol, jet fuel, and diesel. Under the obligation, fuel wholesalers must cut the total greenhouse gas emissions from the transport fuels they sell by a set percentage each year, by deploying biofuels as part of their fuel supply. The year’s delay would reportedly be compensated by adjustments on emissions intensity reduction targets imposed on fuel wholesalers in the period leading up to 2035.

In the Hauraki Gulf, 274 days had marine heatwave conditions, which is 75% of the year, says Smith. The long-running marine heatwave conditions are likely caused by a combination of factors. Recent marine heatwaves around New Zealand have caused die-offs of some marine species, including coastal kelp forests and penguins.

Consumer prices rose by 7.2% over the past year, and food price inflation hit a 14 year high of 10% in October. The elevated level of inflation expectations is a big worry for the RBNZ. Compounding the challenges for the RBNZ is that once inflation expectations do rise, it can be difficult to pull them down again. However, inflation pressures are now increasingly related to domestic factors, particularly the pressures in the labour market. That has only taken them back to where they were in April last year, highlighting the ferocity of the price rise over 2020 and 2021.
