This year marks a century since an extraordinary medical breakthrough – the use of insulin to treat diabetes mellitus. But it took another 300 years for a link between diabetes and the pancreas to be discovered. In January 1922, 14-year-old Leonard Thompson, hospitalised and near death in Toronto, became the first person to receive insulin and survive diabetes. Getty ImagesBreakthroughs in glucose monitoringAt the same time as insulin therapy was being developed, glucose-monitoring technology was also progressing. Crude assessment of glucose in the urine, used in New Zealand until the early 1980s, was superseded by the development of finger-prick blood-glucose measurements.

But, simply listing facts, especially when they are stripped of context, is not the same as telling the truth. To grasp the truth of Adolf Hitler’s contribution to world history requires more than mere facts, it requires understanding, interpretation and judgement. Ardern’s reference to the Fourth Labour Government shows just how much of the truth can be obscured through the presentation of a few highly dubious “facts”. The Labour Party does not like to be criticised and is fiercely protective of its leaders. There is so much that the Labour Party could learn from its past.

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has released its October results, which showed that only 4892 residential sales were recorded throughout the nation in October, which was down 35% compared to October last year and down 31% compared to October 2019 before the Covid pandemic disrupted the market. Perhaps even more significant was the fact that sales fell in October compared to September (-4.3%). This is unusual given sales generally rise strongly in October:Commenting on the sales result, REINZ CEO Jen Baird noted that “adjusting for seasonality, we note sales are down 9.5% — October performed poorer than expected compared to September”. Personally, I view this price rebound as a ‘dead cat bounce’ given the Reserve Bank is expected to hike interest rates aggressively over coming months to tame stubbornly high inflation. As long as the Reserve Bank continues to lift interest rates, New Zealand house prices will fall.

This week global anti-corruption agency Transparency International released a report on lobbying, which described New Zealand’s lack of regulation as “glaring”. Transparency International New Zealand has developed an international comparison of New Zealand’s lobbying regulations so that MPs here can decide whether to reform this sector. Transparency International compared New Zealand’s lobbying rules with ten other similar countries, including the US and Canada, and found that New Zealand is at the unregulated end of the spectrum. Revelations that former Cabinet Minister Kris Faafoi recently moved almost straight from the highest levels of government to be a lobbyist highlighted the lack of rules. But our democracy has nothing.” Hill also suggests that the media is enabling the lucrative lobbying model: “Media should stop using lobbyists as political commentators.
