Woods made the announcement in Hamilton, the city set to benefit the most from the Infrastructure Acceleration Fund announcement. Of the $539.8 million budgeted for road and water infrastructure improvements, Hamilton would receive $150.6 million of the spend. For Hamilton, its funding would allow for the construction of water infrastructure including a new reservoir and pump station. Across the city, Auckland would also benefit from $7.3 million invested in road-safety improvements near the Ōrākei pā. Before this, Woods said $916.3 million of the $1 billion infrastructure package had been spent.

Statistics New Zealand today released its year-on-year update on births and deaths between September 2021 and September 2022. It showed a “sharp” 10 per cent increase in the mortality rate, with 38,052 registered deaths up from 34,578 in the previous 12 months. Of these, 5 per cent - or 2025 deaths - were attributed to Covid, according to the Ministry of Health data. While this year’s Covid death rate was around ten times greater than the road toll, he said had the infection not arrived to a highly-vaccinated population the mortality rate would have been easily ten-fold higher. Cases in recent days have topped 4000 and deputy director general of health Dr Andrew Old warned of an uncertain outlook for summer as a cocktail of new variants circulated across the country.

It seems New Zealand is about to slow down, with proposals to reduce urban speed limits right across the country, as well as on state highways. But survivors’ stories, such as those recorded by transportation consultant Jeanette Ward, also powerfully demonstrate how lower speeds can save lives. The first is that evidence shows lower speed limits in urban areas add virtually no time to journeys. A range of other benefits from reducing speed limits are identified by Paul Tranter and Rod Tolley in their book Slow Cities. Overall, reduced speed limits in urban areas would not only reduce injuries and deaths, they would also make our towns and cities better places to live.

Customs officers intercepted two shipments of illicit tobacco from Tonga over the past year. An Auckland businessman has been arrested for allegedly being involved in the smuggling of illegal tobacco from Tonga, believed to total $1.8 million in avoided taxes. Inspections of shipping containers at Customs’ Sea Cargo Inspections Facility in Auckland discovered the loose-leaf tobacco, Customs said. Customs Investigations manager Cam Moore warned people buying cheap tobacco needed to be sceptical of sellers’ claims that the tobacco was legal. “Over recent years, Customs has ramped up its tobacco seizures and arrests, and is also seeing an increased overlap of illegal tobacco with other illicit commodities and financial crimes.”“Illicit tobacco is not a victimless crime.

Israel Adesanya has been stopped at JFK Airport in New York just days after his UFC bout against Brazil's Alex Pereira. Kiwi UFC star Israel Adesanya was stopped by airport security in New York for possessing metal knuckles but was released soon after and is now on his way home. Adesanya allegedly went through JFK Airport security with the knuckles, TMZ Sports reported. When flagged at the airport, Israel quickly disposed of the item and co-operated with authorities. The incident occurred just four days after Adesanya lost his UFC middleweight title to Brazil’s Alex Pereira on Sunday.

Meltingly tender and warmly spiced aubergine and tomatoes harmonise beautifully with crispy, salty halloumi. Add the aubergine and saute for 5 minutes to lightly brown. Heat remaining oil in a clean frying pan and fry the halloumi for about a minute on each side until golden brown. To serve, spread the aubergine into a serving dish and top with halloumi. Squeeze the lemon juice over the halloumi and drizzle a little more olive oil over the whole dish.

Trade Me has released its October housing report, which reported that the number of homes listed for sale across New Zealand jumped by 43% year-on-year, marking the highest annual number of listings for an October on record. Commenting on the result, Trade Me Property Sales Director Gavin Lloyd noted “nationwide supply has now seen an annual increase for 13 months in a row”. “This is the first time we have seen a year-on-year increase of less than 5% since April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic”, according to Gavin Lloyd. Values also rebounded 1% month-on-month in October, “which mirrors what we have seen in previous years where the market picks up during the warmer months”, according to Lloyd. So long as the RBNZ continues to lift interest rates, New Zealand house prices will necessarily continue to fall.

Pharmac is seeking feedback on a proposal to fund the meningococcal B vaccine from March 1, 2023, for children up to 12 months of age, and a catch-up programme for children from 13 to 59 months of age until August 31, 2025. He said he did not want to see a repeat of the meningococcal B outbreak from the early 2000s which hit south Auckland's Pasifika and Māori communities hard. "Over the past few years the number of meningococcal B cases being notified has been increasing and we want to acknowledge the concern from the public and advocacy groups including the Meningitis Foundation," he said. According to the Ministry of Health an increasing number of meningococcal B cases were detected in New Zealand in the late 1990s, which led to the development of the MeNZB vaccine.
