The Egyptian cabinet’s Media Center on Tuesday denied rumors that the monorail project would be restricted to serving residents of the New Administrative Capital. The center said claims of this matter reported by several websites and on social media are baseless. The monorail will serve all commuters from Cairo and Giza to New Cairo, the New Administrative Capital and Nasr City. It will link the Greater Cairo region with the New Administrative Capital, and contributes to facilitating the movement of employees. The US$4.5 billion monorail project is the first of its kind in Egypt and includes two lines: a 43 km-long rail set to extend from 6th of October City to Giza, and another rail connecting Cairo’s New Administrative Capital to Nasr City at a length of 54 km.

CAIRO – 29 June 2021: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) expected the Egyptian economy to grow by 4.2 percent in 2021, and 5.2 percent in 2022. EBRD stated in a report that Egypt is one of the few countries that announced recording economic growth during 2020. It expected that the telecommunications sector will continue to grow, and that the decrease in unemployment rates will contribute to supporting the movement of consumption and private investment. It foresaw that foreign direct investment flows will recover, while the risks include slow vaccination operations, weak expectations for the tourism sector, and slowing momentum in major investment projects. For the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has raised its forecast for economic growth to 3.5 percent in 2021.

Egypt is set to receive up to 26.6 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine, according to the Adviser to the President for Health Affairs Awad Tag Eddin on Tuesday. The Head of the Coptic General Authority (CGA) Sherif Doss announced on his Facebook page the death of business tycoon Onsi Sawiris, age 91. Onsi was the head of Sawiris and the father to the billionaires Nassef Sawiris, Samih Sawiris, and Naguib Sawiris. The company was partially nationalized in 1961 and later completely, and Sawiris remained as its head for five years. Sawiris later immigrated to Libya in 1966 and worked there in constructions, before returning to Egypt in the mid-seventies. By 1976, he established the Orascom General Contracting and Trade company, which later became Orascom Construction Industries.

Archaeological and engineering procedures and equipment are in full swing to conduct a final simulation for the transfer of the King Khufu Boat from its current location in the Giza Pyramids area to its permanent display at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) within the next few weeks. In 1954, parts of a cedar-wood barge were found in five pits near the Great Pyramid of Khufu. The boat was restored and assembled out of 1200 pieces of wood and it is displayed, since then, in a glass museum near the Great Pyramid in Giza. The transfer of the boat takes intensive planning and a practical rehearsal. The GEM was originally supposed to open in 2020, however, the opening was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The National Wages Council on Monday has set the minimum wage for workers in the private sector at LE2,400 per month, taking into account the economic conditions of establishments currently unable to comply with it and excluding them from it starting from January 2022. Impacted establishments can submit their complaint to the complaints committee of the council and the wages committee of the council until October whether individually for each establishment or through its affiliated unions. The council approved the payment of the periodic bonus to workers in the private sector at three percent of the insurance contribution wage and at least LE60, starting from July. Minister of Planning Hala al-Saeed said that the council’s decisions regarding the periodic bonus or the minimum wage tried to take into account several considerations, foremost of which is the interest of workers and the need to achieve an appropriate increase in wages.
