Canada's public broadcaster CBC and its French-language arm Radio-Canada are returning to Twitter after the social media platform removed the "government-funded media" labelCanada's public broadcaster CBC and its French-language arm Radio-Canada said Tuesday that they were returning to Twitter after the social media site removed a "government-funded media" label. The outlets had paused posting on Twitter on April 17 because of the tag which they said unfairly questioned their editorial independence. Luce Julien, executive director of Radio-Canada, said it and the CBC would now resume posting on certain Twitter accounts because it is essential to provide credible information to the public. "We owe it to ourselves as a public media company to be active there and to continue to disseminate verified information." Julien also said Radio-Canada will not pay to receive a blue verification tick from Twitter, saying the checkmarks are no longer a guarantee of credibility.

Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei was handed his walking papers Monday. The action came after drawn-out deliberations as politicians and bureaucrats weighed what to do in the face of inevitable retaliation by Beijing. Diplomats in Canada have been warned that if they engage in this type of behaviour, they will be sent home,” Joly said in a statement. However, the government’s action would been more forceful and sincere had it occurred when the activities of the Toronto-based Chinese diplomat first became known. That was in 2021, when a report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service identified a campaign by Chinese operatives.

SECAUCUS, N.J. — The Chicago Blackhawks won the NHL draft lottery Monday night and with it the right to select Connor Bedard with the first pick, parlaying one of their worst seasons in decades into a potentially franchise-altering player. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly unveiled a placard featuring the Blackhawks logo at 8:22 p.m. EDT, signifying they had gotten the No. Chicago had the third-highest odds of winning the lottery at 11.5%, behind Anaheim’s 25.5% and Columbus’ 13.5%. “Everyone wants to win the lottery, then everything is your control, and obviously everybody’s talked about a special player at the top of the rankings. The strategy worked: Chicago lost 56 of 82 games to set up a chance at Bedard.

OTTAWA—Canada is expelling a Chinese diplomat accused of gathering intelligence on a Conservative MP’s family, in a move likely to exacerbate tensions between the two countries. “I have been clear: we will not tolerate any form of foreign interference in our internal affairs. The statement called the claim of Chinese interference in Canada a “lie” propagated by a “certain politician and media,” and accused Canada of breaking unspecified international laws. “There are members of the Chinese Canadian community who have been warning about interference, been warning about intimidation for decades. All of this occurs with the clock ticking down on a deadline for David Johnston, the special rapporteur on foreign interference, to submit interim recommendations on how the government should best handle the overall issue.

SEATTLE — All is quiet, all is calm at the luxury hotel where the Stars are resting near Pike Place Market. ”The bottom line is in Game 2 we played one of our best games in the playoffs,’’ Stars coach Pete DeBoer said Monday. In the playoffs, Robertson has two goals in nine games. The Stars don’t need an overhaul, but they can definitely use a shot of energy in this highly caffeinated city. Anything that stands a chance of bringing Robertson into the discussion of best players in the playoffs needs to be attempted.

On the April 28th broadcast of the CBC Radio One program Let’s Go hosted by Sabrina Marandola, a brief segment was aired which repeated problematic anti-Israel propaganda. During the segment, intern Vanna Blacksmith spotlighted an art exhibition hosted by the Palestinian Youth Movement organization, taking place in downtown Montreal. Following Israel’s proclamation of independence in 1948, it was immediately invaded by surrounding Arab states, who intended to destroy the newly reborn Jewish State. It’s also true that a large number of Arabs who were living in pre-state Israel were displaced as a result of the war. The organization hosting the art event mentioned by Blacksmith, the Palestinian Youth Movement, is one which is not deserving of receiving fawning exposure on a Canadian broadcaster, particularly a publicly-funded one.
